Default A new kind of fantasy baseball game

I created a public league named “FanHome”, jump in if you are interested. No password needed. It is FREE to play. Rotohog - Home

In a nutshell it is a baseball salary cap game. The pricing is similar to an auction league, but is run much differently. Below are some selections from their FAQ to give you a quick overview of how it works:

Starting with a budget of $275 RotoHog (fake) dollars, you select athletes for your team roster in a competitive free-for-all draft that will be held between March 12 and 29 on the day and time that you select to draft. You can draft with 11 of your friends in a 12-person private draft or meet 11 new people in a 12-person public draft room.

Then, beginning on March 30, you can start selling your athletes and buying new ones on the RotoHog Trading Floor, where athlete prices change in an open market based on supply and demand, much like a stock market. To regulate supply, one complete set of athletes is available for every 12 managers in the RotoHog Universe.

As in most traditional fantasy baseball, you win by creating a lineup each day that gets you the most total points over the season using a standard points-based scoring system. But by shrewdly managing your roster -- buying and selling athletes at the right times for a "profit" -- you can increase your budget during the course of the season, thereby allowing you to construct a team with the greatest scoring potential.

The manager with the largest score at the end of the season wins $100,000; the second-place finisher gets $25,000, and so on (see Prize FAQ). Weekly prizes may also be awarded for the best in your city, your campus, and even zip code. But sign up today because space is limited to the first 100,000 managers during RotoHog's Beta Baseball.

How can I simultaneously compete against my friends and against the world?

You draft and manage just one team but you can enter it into as many private or public leagues with your friends as you wish. Each private league can be of any size and is not restricted to your original draft group. Your team is also automatically enrolled in the global league competition for $100,000 and other prizes. Since all managers across the entire RotoHog Universe buy and sell athletes on the same open Trading Floor, your team is directly compared with every other manager across the entire RotoHog Universe.

Can I trade athletes with my friends?

No, because that would allow for unfair trades, as often happens in old-school fantasy sports. Every manager in the RotoHog Universe buys and sells athletes on the same open market RotoHog Trading Floor.

Can one of my friends in one of my private leagues own the same athlete as me?
Yes, that is certainly possible. But globally there is only one of each athlete available for every 12 managers. So, while your private league might have two Albert Pujols, some other private league might not have any. Allowing for this possibility creates a more skill-based game and also recognizes that better athletes are more valuable. Do want to add Albert Pujols to your team during the season? No longer must you beg another person in your private league for a trade who happened to get Pujols by luck of the original draft order. Instead, you can buy Pujols on the open market. Sure, he'll be expensive, and so you must consider your budget. But RotoHog puts you in control.

Why does RotoHog use a points-based scoring system instead of rotisserie or head-to-head competition?

A points based system allows you to compare your skill level across a wide range of managers in the RotoHog Universe. You can then meet new people in your zip code, college, work or across the world and immediately compare teams. Some experts also argue that a points-based system is the best predictor of real-world talent.

PS - I also created a public league named "Seattle Mariner Fans", join this one too if you are an M's fan!
