Let's pretend you could have a draft that included all MLB players throughout history.
Who would make a spot on one of these 24 teams? Who is the best of the best at each position... I'm mostly looking at total careers, however if a player had a particularly great season or 2 or 3 (like Maris 61 in 61 or Gagne in 03 or Earl Webb hitting 67 doubles in 1931) we certainly can name those guys too. The purpose for this exercise is I am playing a simulated baseball game and am trying to put together a league of 24 fairly evenly matched teams featuring the greatest of all time. The positions that are obviously a little tougher to fill are 2B,SS,3B and C. Pitching is tough too as if each team has a 5 man rotation that would require 120 pitchers... Anyway hoping to get some input and spark some interest. Thanks |

greg, you may want to use baseball-reference.com play index and spend the 30$.
Batting Season Finder - Baseball-Reference PI That's an example of anyone who played 100 games, min 60% in the IF sorted by OPS+ from 1901-2007. Considering that you likely don't want to have a player on two different team with two different seasons, even Robin Yount down at 134 would be likely to be in it. You could even set it up to take a three season composite for each player so a singular season doesn't sway too much. I mean really do you think that Brady Anderson is one of the top CF of all time? I strongly suggest a certain period of time to judge as peak, either 3,4,or 5 years. Playing with this as well you could set up divisions based on pre-integration, integration, expansion and PED if you like. Basically what I'm saying is that the search engine is rather powerful over there. A caution, how do you do defense? Can LF and RF be swapped? Can a great SS be used at 2B/3B? Can a third baseman be used in any corner (LF/RF/1b)? Also, will you use the DH? If not how would Edgar Martinez fit into your league? For makeup of the bench I would look at MI, CO, BC, 4OF and one offensive player of choice I think it is likely that the following players from my favorite team should make the cut. Ichiro, Griffey, ARod, Edgar, Vizquel, and depending on parameters Jay Buhner on offense. For pitchers, Randy, Moyer, Kazuhiro Sasaki and JJ Putz

A few weeks ago I launched my own blog about Seattle Sounders FC and Life in Puget Sound. I won't be by these parts often as my focus has changed. Sorry about the unannounced retirement. |

I had no idea baseball reference had such a thing...
Definitely yes to the DH, I'd like to include as many greats as I could... Defense is not so bad. A LF could play RF pretty interchangably. SS used at 2B and 3B would be trickier, but is doable. Last edited by greg.simonster; November 5th, 2007 at 01:51 PM. |
