What is the manliest food to eat?

Anything from the high lethality group. It doesn't have to be fatal if it at least has some sort of painful consequences, such as cabbage or baked beans. The idea is to show that you're unafraid of the risks. Denny's seems to cater to that macho mentality, most of the breakfast combinations consist of instant coronary fat, starch and sugar.

Why does the Pina Colada song keep running through my head?

What do you mean? You're still 287 posts ahead of me, just behind Willie Wilson.

What's the next great record to fall now that it is rather likely that AB and PA for a season will go down? GIDP?

A few weeks ago I launched my own blog about Seattle Sounders FC and Life in Puget Sound. I won't be by these parts often as my focus has changed. Sorry about the unannounced retirement. |

In 1954, Gil Hodges had 19 sacrifice flies. Andre Dawson had 18 in 1983, Juan Gonzalez 16 in 2001 and Mark Loretta 16 in 2004. Of the top ten single season leaders, all have come since 1983 except Hodges and Roy White who had 17 in 1971. Obviously sacrifice fly ability is on the rise and it would seem only a matter of time before Hodges is reduced to a memory. No one threatening this season, Carlos Lee leads MLB with 13, but within a few years, we should see some batter with a score or more of sac flies. And our man Jimmy Rollins has shown some potential in the all important most outs made category. Through still a young man, he already appears twice on the top 35 all time list. (521 outs in 2006, 516 in 2002), Jose Reyes has made the most recent serious attempt at the record, generating 536 outs in 2005, good for a 4th place tie all time. Still, no one has really come close to that magical 560 figure set the same year that Willie Wilson set the at bats record. I speak, with great reverence, of Omar the Outmaker, the amazing Moreno of the Pirates. Where many players have matched Omar's inability to reach base, few have had his extraordinary ability to create additional outs with his inept baserunning. In 1980, Omar added 33 outs to his record total on caught stealings alone. |

Hillary Clinton was asked this week whether she was a lesbian. In fairness, shouldn't all the current presidential candidates be asked the same thing? Who among the other candidates is most likely to be a lesbian?

Last night the Red Sox struck out 17 times on their way to an 8-1 victory. I thought that striking out that many times yet winning handily was unusual. Do you think the Sox approached some wierd kind of record like the most times striking out while winning by seven or more runs?

My mind has been on wondering if Jack Cust is setting some sort of record for the lowest percentage of putting balls into play. He has 371 at bats, 99 walks and 153 strikeouts. That means in 470 plate appearances, he has put the ball in play 218 times...46 % of the time. Ryan Howard is having a fine year at this as well. He has 601 plate appearances with 100 walks and 190 stirkeouts. He has put the ball into play 311 times or 51 %. I haven't done an organized search for the record holder, but I checked on some likely suspects...Reggie Jackson, Jay Buhner, Darrel Evans, Sal Bando....and the lowest figure I could find was Rob Deer's in 1991 for Detroit. In 537 plate appearances he walked 89 times and whiffed 175 times, ball was in play 273 times, or .508. So, unless someone is aware of a greater season than Deer's, then Cust is approaching glory. |
