Are you a fan of TV theme songs and do you mourn their decline?

There were more terrible ones than there were good ones, but there were a number of very good ones. My favorite is the theme from "Falcon Crest." Bad show but great music. "Hawaii Five-O" was another good one, as were "Rawhide", "I Spy", "Rockford Files", several versions of the "Doctor Who" theme, and you have to admit that "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" and the "Ballad of Gilligan's Island", stick in your head. Those latter two also have musical merit, Flatt and Scruggs for the Hillbillies...and did you ever notice that the key changes, goes up with each verse on the Gilligan theme?

Behind the treasures is an army of misery, the leading offender probably being the excrutiatingly vapid "Three's Company" song. The loud playing of "The Brady Bunch" theme could be used in psyops situations like the Branch Davidian standoff. "Then Came Maude" sounded to me like some self written "Hey! Welcome To My Groovy Swinging Show" fanfare by a Reno lounge singer. The largest category is the blah, those themes that had no sticking power good or bad. Does anyone remember the theme from shows like "T.J. Hooker" or "Voyage To The Bottom of the Sea" or "Walker: Texas Ranger" or "My Mother The Car?"

I'm excluding a number of meritorious TV themes because they were originally written for movies. "MASH" is one, "Star Trek: The Next Generation" is another.

Were there any shows in which the theme song was so good, it actually carried the show, which was otherwise undeserving of fame, fortune, or a lengthy run? "Spongebob Squarepants" comes to mind.

Well, yeah, that's how the whole discussion began, talking about how the opening of "F-Troop" was the singular notable thing about the program.

If they're stuck, just smash em out, it's a rental and I got the insurance this time. And oh, I don't think the horn is broken, I just don't think there is one.

Many shows today have no real theme "songs" (that idnetify with the show) like the old shows had. Do you miss these?

No, I jumped straight to second childhood, avoiding that depressing reexamination of goals and failures.
