If Paris Hilton set up a foundation (which she says she wants to do) to help incarcerated women return to society and get their lives back in order, would you consider making a donation to the fund?

I don't blame them for giving in to long time frustrations and making this gesture, however, these things have been done in the past and I cannot recall anything changing as a consequence. The Saints fans were reduced to basically mooning the team for a long time and eventually the team did improve, but it took a couple of decades, so it probably wasn't the mocking fans.

I am least impressed with celebrity charity pitches which only come after the celebrity has been afflicted in some mannner with the problem for which the charity is raising funds. Did Christopher Reeve care about spinal injuries before his accident? Did Michael J. Fox crusade against Parkinson's disease before contracting it? How much money did the Glasers raise to fight AIDS before...etc.

Now here they are telling us how the single most important thing in the world is that you join the fight against.....whatever.

This foundation sounds exactly like what one would expect a group of publicity agents to suggest to Paris in an image rehab effort.

Having said all that, I will also state that regardless of the motivations of the person doing some good, if some good gets done, best not to complain.

The ratio of the diameters of the Sun and the Moon is exactly the same as the ratio of their respective distances from Earth, hence they have an identical apparent disk size when seen from Earth. (Within a plus/minus tolerance for a slight variation owing to the elliptical orbits, which I'm sure you would have pointed out, but does not sully the propostion.) Is this simply an exremely improbable coincidece, or does it have some cosmic significance relevant to life on earth, such as tidal parity?

You cannot evaluate the "extreme improbability"...or probability...of anything when you have but one example.

I searched for "tidal parity" on Google and received this message:
Your search - "tidal parity" - did not match any documents.
Do you have any idea what jtur means by "tidal parity"?

I think he means that being the WBC champ or being the WBA champ, are more or less equal in prestige status.

"Ask Grandstander" has been offered time slots on the Home Shopping Network, Oprah's Oxygen, the Golf Channel, Noggin & The Nick, Turner South, and Fox News. Any thoughts yet about which one you plan to accept?

I thought Ask GS, Inc. had enough Jews on the Board of Directors that we already own all of those networks. Did I miss something?

Our "Ask Grandstander Girls Gone Wild" show has been doing quite well on SPIKE, they seem the most receptive to our general programming plans.

If you had gotten the kind of Jews I told you we needed when I put you in charge of recruiting board members, then maybe we would own all those networks by now.

The living ones seem more reasonable than the biblical ones.

If the U.S. had been repulsed at Iwo Jima (and it was quite possible that they would have been)....would a sort of detante' without the dropping of the atom bombs be possible to bring an end to the Pacific war?

I do not think that there would have been any sort of negotiated end, they would have regrouped and taken another crack at Iwo Jima, or figured out a way to bypass it and cut it off, and still prosecuted the war to the unconditional surrender of Japan.

Keep in mind the cause of the conflict was Japan's ongoing occupation of China. That was the reason for the US shutting off oil supplies to Japan...to get them out of China.

At the same time, that Japan's war would be against the US and Britain by expanding to the South, or against Russia by expanding to the North, was a matter not decided until mid 1941 when Japan discovered that they would be able to operate at full capacity for only another 18 months before oil shortages crippled them. That was what sent them after the Dutch oil fields in Indonesia and sent them against American and British strogholds to secure a safe permimeter. That's what sent them South and that's why they had to attack. All of it was being done so that they could maintain their hold on China.

There would have been no compelling reason, after a repulsed Iwo Jima invasion, for Japan to agree to the evacuation of China. The US would be short of its original war aim. A failure at Iwo Jima would not have been fatal to Allied arms, merely delayed them.
