VV

Did you say "W?" It was actually a brace of "v's"

Seems to me with all the possible available shapes, that they could have come up with something more distinct for "W" than jamming a couple of "Vs" together. I mean, when they wanted a symbol to represent "Q", they didn't just decide to go "PP."

Equal save the difference in good pr that surfing has always enjoyed. We would not be hearing the outcry today against water boarding if we had an entire generation of national leaders who had grown up with water boarding music. Suppose that rather than the insipid "Surf City", Jan and Dean had chosen instead to honor our fighting forces with "Interogation City?"

"I got 34 ragheads and I call them my prisoners
(Hurt City, here they come)
You know we warned what we do but they sure ain't no listeners
(Hurt City here they come)
Well they ain't got no lawyers and no civil rights
Should thought of that 'for they 'cided to fight

Cause we're gonna water board em
Don't you know we'll have fun
Gonna water board em
Then their bloods gonna run
Gonna water board em
And we'll make em confess
Gonna water board em
We'll leave Allah the mess
Two names from every rat

...and so forth.

Then water boarding would have a positive image and we would not be getting all this bleeding heart whining about how we are treating people who want to kill us because we are infidels.

What is the reason National League teams suck in interleague competition and in the All-Star game? Is it anything beyond the fact that it's just an inferior league? Something like a 45 game advantage to the AL this year and about 150 game advantage over the last 5 years.

I do not believe the case is league inferiority, indeed, I started a thread on the MLB board addressing how the NL is performing offensively at the same level as the AL right now despite the absense of the DH. Take a look, if interested, we can continue on this subject in that thread.

Creeping NL Superiority?

With two girls for every boy, is polygamy legal in Surf City?

That instantly became a moot matter. Once the song was released, an immense number of boys rushed to Surf City to capitalize on the imbalance, so many that they swung the balance the other way and wound up with five boys for every girl.

Favorite Mutinies:

Why does the Mutiny on the Bounty, which as mutinies goes was fairly benign, get all the attention and the Mutiny on HMS Hermoine which was far bloodier and which resulted in the Captain and all of the officers being murdered and the ship turned over to the Spanish, get no mention?

Great question, I had never thought specifically about why the Bounty mutiny resounds in history while others remain obscure. Speculating, I suspect that the book that made it famous owes a portion of its popularity to the fact that the co-uthors were both veterans of the Lafayette Squadron in WW I. The Great War was one which tended to feature few heroes from the infantry. Warfare was static and futile, victories vague and costly, generalship severely limited by the absense of flanks on the western front. Both Germany and England thought their dreadnought class battleships so costly, they were afraid to risk them in fleet actions, so no great naval heroes emerged. The consequence of all this was for the flying aces to be made into larger than life warriors, way out of whack with their actual military importance.

So....if you survived the war, the very best thing to have been was a fighter pilot, you had fame upon which to capitalize and folks generally took a romantic view of you. Having your name on a book was going to boost sales. The triology of books did indeed sell tremendously well, the Clark Gable movie further enhanced matters. The Bounty Mutiny became the mutiny.

Fame does not always follow what we might think of as a reasonable path. For example, reading Josephus, it is quite apparent that John the Baptist was a much bigger deal than was Jesus while they were alive, but look what happened with them.
