That unfortunate young woman who returned home after running away to marry the Muslim, she got Kurd stomped. I think it's pretty much the same thing.

How many licks does it take to get to the tootsie center of a tootsie pop?

If you're skilled, just one.

Today, while stumbling around online, I came across the following quote from John Henry Cardinal Newman, a 19th-century English Catholic theologian:

"I will not shrink," Newman wrote, "from uttering my firm conviction, that it would be a gain to this country, were it vastly more superstitious, more bigoted, more gloomy, more fierce in its religion, than at present it shows itself to be."

I wonder if the good Cardinal wasn't a man ahead of his time, and in the wrong country. Your thoughts?

I think that most readers would correctly guess my response. I am pretty strongly on board record as being anti-superstition, anti-religion and anti-bigotry. Gloomy? That is merely mood dependent. As an ephemeral emotion, gloom counts for nothing, neither does ephemeral euphoria.

I think more honestly stated, the Cardinal's assertion would have not been "gain for this country", rather it would have been "gain for me." He's in the superstition business, he's just running a promotion.

It looks as if my choices are down to Gaza, Baghdad, Darfur or Mogadishu. Have I missed anywhere else significant?

Yes, but it wouldn't come to him.

Can't say that I recall having a favorite, I cannot recall liking them much at all. I was never the sort to simply let art wash over me, I would deconstruct and adults got discouraged pretty quickly when they were hearing things like..."Okay, so what? The mouse runs up the clock, it strikes one and he runs down? What about it? Was it important that it was one o'clock rather than any other time? Was it simply the striking of the clock which caused it to run down and any time would have done it, or was it the case that the mouse realized it was late for something upon learning it is one o'clock? Aren't there more details here which make sense of any of this? Why do I need to know this at all?"
