There is a bit of 'street moralism' in which you never bail on your bros. Have you ever been in a position where you unashamedly sold out your homies to avoid negative consequences?

Among the parts of the human brain, how would you rank the zona limitans intrathalamica, in importance? How would society be different if everyone's zona limitans intrathalamica were somehow impaired? What famous person do you think best exhibits such an impairment: Manny Ramirez, Sam Brownback, or Judge Judy?. Feel free to take this one and run with it---nobody will object to a long dissertation on this subject, and there will probably be follow-up qeustions.)

See, they put Sparky Anderson in the Hall and do you really think that he was Herzog's equal in managing a ballclub? I surely do not. With the Reds, Anderson's only real challenge was knowing how to spell Bench, Morgan and Rose when making out the lineup card. I thought the Sparkster underacheived when he moved to the Tigers. Detroit had the strongest roster of any AL team for that decade and Anderson got them into the postseason twice. He managed that team from '79-'95...two post season appearances. Herzog on the other hand took over a crappy KC team in 1975 and won the division with them in '77, '78 and '80. Then he took over a Cardinals team which had not been in the post season in 13 years and won with them in '82, '85 and '87. Further, listening to Anderson talk, he was always full of crap and cliches. He would keep running horrible players like Enos Cabell out there because Enos was "we" player and and a great clubhouse influence and a stand up guy and so forth, all of which neglected the fact that the man was a wretched liability as a ballplayer. Every year Sparky would be talking about how his new thirdbaseman was the "best looking young thirdbaseman since....." fill in the blank, Ron Santo, Greg Nettles, Pie Traynor...whatever name popped into Sparky's head. He was putting out all this bullbleep about guys like Tom Brookens and Aurelio Rodriguez and Wayne Krenchicki and every year, by June 1st, thirdbase for the Tigers was being played by a three man platoon named Alejandro Perez. The one "best young thirdbaseman since....." that Sparky saw right away wasn't going to work out, was Howard Johnson, so he quickly traded him to the Mets. Contrast all the brown stuff which flowed from Anderson's mouth with a Whitey Herzog interview. Herzog was the ultimate no bs manager. He would give candid, honest, intelligent answers. He would explain why he did whatever he did and it was always some impressive bit of thinking on his part. Instead of approaching ballclub morale as a rah rah dynamic like Anderson, Herzog was decisive and specific. When Ted Simmons, probably the most popular Cardinal on the team, refused to shift from catcher to first to help the team, Herzog just got rid of him. When .300 hitting shortstop Gary Templeton threatened to play at half speed when he was unhappy, Herzog instantly got rid of him. (Traded him for Ozzie Smith...you would have to have been around when this was done to realize that Herzog was crucified by the media for that trade...a .300 hitting shortstop for a .225 hitting shortstop?) Anyway, I thought that it was very obvious that Herzog's teams were winning largely as a result of Herzog's handling of the ballclubs. Conversely, Sparky's teams won despite him. But Sparky is a HoF manager and Whitey is not. |

You are incorrect. Nearly everyone, including me, would not be welcoming a long dissertation on this. And even if there were follow up questions, there will be no follow up answers. |

Were you as surprised as I that the medulla oblongata got robbed by the committee and only came in at #3 on the People Magazine Sexiest Brain Parts list?

Sour grapes. I grow weary of the annual complaints from you medulla oblogonta champions, your sense of entitlement is annoying. If you are losing out every year to the hypothalamus, then it's because folks just don't think that the medulla oblongata handles very sexy functions. Blood pressure, heart rate, these are things people take for granted and view them as mechanical, not erotic.
