I tend to prefer the darks and ambers like Newcastle among others.... damn the carbs. btw, I've had a phone interview with Miller brewing for a job in Irwindale, CA. Hope they don't ask preference questions if I get an on site. Last edited by SamJ; January 27th, 2007 at 10:36 PM. |

The Class VI is the store on any DoD base that sells alcohol. Usually has a much better variety than the offbase stores, as the Class VI does not need to follow state/local import/export laws. This leads to a much more diverse selection. Also considering that so many of the service members have served overseas the Class VI can bring in a wider variety of international brews as they will sell more than say a store in Clarksville, TN.
and steeple, I think that one who lives in Oregon, Washington and likely Colorado could live off of those beers alone.

If you are dropping that thinking I have Class VI access, I don't. Those days are done for me, like a life nearly forgotten.

I'm not a beer snob, mainly go for a S.A Boston Lager or Guinness (bottled or tap, it's all good). Don't care for these West Coast microbrews & their sour aftertaste (Anchor, Sierra, etc). Gordon Bierch makes a crisp golden lager, and this new Berkeley company Trumer is pushing its pilsner hard...
Incidentally, I think it was Fanhome a few years ago where someone reproduced a worldwide beer sales-by-label listing which I found quite interesting (Bud & Bud Light were #1 & 2 ). Anyone know where I can find an updated version? Google provided nothing... |

Nat,
You are referring to the taste of the Hops used in the brewing. Extra hops ("hoppiness") provide a characteristic bite to a brew. I happen to like it most of the time, but it's not always what I'm in the mood to taste. It's OK to have a preference, man. Anyway, I think you'll find that many beers brewed by those same people do NOT have the same levels of hoppiness to them. Try the lagers and (some) pilsners made by those same folks, or look at brown ales & stouts. |

Beer Ratings, brewer, brewpub, bar, beer reviews and more
This is a great listing of quality beers. Unfortunately, my personaly favorite (Westvleteren) just got overtaken by a Swedish beer i have never heard of. |

It shouldn't be by anyone with a Costco membership. When you can get a microbrew for less than 1$ a bottle, why wouldn't you?

Another thing to keep in mind is that the hops will have different effects on the beer depending on when in the process they are added. You control whether the hops will contribute to the initial smell/nose of the beer, the flavor of it, or a lingering aftertaste. Depending on the style of the beer and the preference of the brewer, there can be a great many points over the course of brewing when hops are added. And, of course, different hops have vastly different smells, tastes, levels of bitterness, etc.

Excellent point, rrandom.
I myself am an unapologetic beer snob...with the caveat that as a borderline alcoholic I reserve the right to resort to swill whenever I feel the need. Having said that, my current focus is strong ales, leading up to and including barleywines (which are, of course, strictly speaking ales). Avery's Beast is worth a look, as well as much of what Dogfish Head (my fave brewery) cranks out. The bigger, the better, and not just the booze. A well crafted monster ale is strong, yes...but it takes a master craftsman to be able to cut the booze with that much flavor to make you forget what you're drinking. I'm not a hops-head, but in a well balanced big bear it's heaven. Case in point...if you can get a bottle of Dogfish Head's 120 minute (not the 90 or 60!) IPA, it's a classic example of huge hops which beautifully cut the malt and sugar of this powerful (nearly 20 percent!) brew. Definately not a session brew, but worth the 10-15 bucks a bottle. More layers of flavor than many wines I've had, and worth the trouble.
