So, who was the most socially influential comedian?

In my opinion it was Bob Newhart, as a stand-up monologist before his TV show. It was Newhart who showed us that our society's truly absurd were not the slapstick clowns on the edge of the parade route. It was the stiffly self-important drum majors leading our cultural parade who were most worthy of derisive ridicule, and we could laugh at ourselves for marching to their step.
