If you were teaching kids to do something you know how to do pretty well, what are the three most fundamental, basic principles you would stress?
For example, if I were coaching kids baseball: 1. The ball doesnt hurt. 2. The easiest thing to learn to do that will help you win is run hard. 3. In warmups and catch, make EVERY throw right on the letters, EVERY time.

1) Personal Responsibility
2) Taking the consequences of your actions 3) Honor 3 of the most important things you can teach children

If I was teaching Arabic
1- Culture matters 2- 29 letters each with multiple forms isn't hard 3- Stick to it, it doesn't get easier, but it does take time

I'm sorry I left for a while. I needed a vaction, and then work changed substantially. I'm over 50 hour weeks, plus two hours a day of commuting time. A few weeks ago I launched my own blog about Seattle Sounders FC and Life in Puget Sound. I won't be by these parts often as my focus has changed. Sorry about the unannounced retirement. |

When I teach chess, I emphasize: 1. The Golden Rule: before you make a move, imagine the piece on the square you're about to place it on and ask yourself, "With that piece on that square, will I lose material or get checkmated within three moves?" If the answer is yes, find another move. 2. At the start of the game, work to control the center of the board with pieces, not pawns. 3. If you want to get better, study tactics. |
