Grandstander, I am truly interested in your theory as to why a poster would refuse to post on a topic due to its location
I do not understand why you are adopting a combative, confrontational stance with this. Have you given no thought at all to the way posters react to these moves? It's as though you are in a harmeless area, having a harmeless discussion, and some authority figure comes along and insists that the conversation take place elsewhere....and doesn't provide you with any sort of reasonable explanation as to why it needs to take place elsewhere. It comes across as hasslin' folks for the sake of hasslin' them. Anyway, it does to me.

There is a point of diminishing returns at work....I check the BBQ each time I am online and typically I am rewarded by finding one or more threads which I wish to read or in which I have been participating and now have a response to make. That reward isn't present when you fragment the boards and one must check multiple places.

If I am a particpant in three threads on the BBQ, I am motivated to check the BBQ for responses. If you splinter the three threads to three different boards, I am less likely to be checking because now it is just one thread of interest and I am less likely to be rewarded by discovering a response. After going there x number of times and finding nothing new, I tend to not go there any longer...and the thread dies because everyone is like me, they don't want to waste time checking on something which isn't likely to reward them.

That's why fragmentation kills threads.

If posters were happy about these new arrangements, why does this thread full of complaints exist?

Move it and I ignore it. Besides there is never anything interesting on infotainment or entertainment. They are dead all the time. This BBQ isn't exactly lively either. So mess with what we the posters like and we just might close you down altogether. It's happened before. I'm like in the worst mood I've been in in...can't even remember the last time I was in this bad a mood. If a rattlesnake tried to bite me he'd be in trouble.

As I understand Bedir's argument, the mods are attempting to attract new participants to the boards. Creating the Infotainment section somehow promises to facilitate that achievement.

If it does do that, then we longtime posters benefit from the new blood. Instead of rehashing the same tired topics with the same old adversaries, we get to rehash them with a whole new lot of idiots, whackos and jerks while undermining the sanity of any normal, reasonable, well-adjusted folk who might happen to stumble upon our buzzing little hive.

What is the cost of this benefit? A few clicks plus a little more exercise for our eye muscles. Seems reasonable to me.

But it isn't attracting new participants, it is attracting dust.

I thought bedir said it was improving his counts. You're right that no one is posting there, but you know how that goes: first you lurk, then you post.

I said it was a test between improving visibility on search engines and the effect on the current userbase.

Shortly after the Fanhome brand was revived, I made the following post on the suggestions Board.

Quote:
At the old place we had a separate board for discussion of movies, TV shows, music, literature and other aspects of the entertainment world. It received a large number of posts.

Why do we not have such a board here? Some would argue there would be nothing left to post about on the main BBQ. but we still discussed personal issues and the like that would not fall under the heading of current events.
I received the following reply from bedir

Quote:
With the much lower activity at this time we felt that Entertainment and the General BBQ could exist together. There is nothing to prevent entertainment topics to be discussed in the BBQ. In fact there is an excellent thread about defining an artist in five songs.
I made a rebuttal and one other person replied before the thread was closed with no further discussion just 2 1/2 days after it was started.

I still favor an Entertainment Board as we had before. We never seemed to have a problem before with knowing which threads to put where. But why is it not directly linked to the other BBQs? And why do we have five sub-boards if you at one time felt that one board would make things too fragmented?

I also don't think the Death Pool thread needed to be moved.

While I still think an Entertainment Board is warranted, the current way it is being handled is a mess and I'd rather not have one at all than the situation that has been created.

People clicking on a message board for the first time are less likely to post if they see a bunch of dead boards.

My favorte change on the board is the explanatory key, that tells us that if the words "New Post" are printed under the little flag, that means that there are New Posts in that category. Always keeping up with the mandate to make everything intuitive and self-explanatory.

I agree with all of these statements. We should have one "entertainment" board, not several, and it should be located in the same "everything but sports" directory as current events and this board.

If "Gdt Smart" and "Covers better. . . " are in this board, what kinds of things will I find in the movie and music boards?

I've noticed very few new threads have been started in the Entertainment boards since they were launched in mid-May. (A thread announcing them was posted May 13 on the Suggestions Board). It seems they aren't very well received.

Could you at least move the Dead Pool thread back here? I mean it isn't really a thread about celebrity discussion, is it?
