That was the name of the gang - The Guests. Their hideout was known as The Guest Room. They wore these things on their heads called Guest Towels. And when someone dissed one of their members, he was added to The Guest List. Their main rivals were a Catholic gang called The Hosts.
As for funny nicknames, some I remember from High School were: Chilly Billy Gomar The Clag Sleazy Steve E-Z King Nyle (ruler of The Invisible Kingdom) Felix Fender (and the never-ending search for the Elusive Silver Bogus) Last edited by dlb; March 26th, 2008 at 08:56 PM. |

When I did my student teaching in Miami Beach, on parent-teacher night I met the father of one of my pupils. He was Marvin "The Torch" Brodsky, supposedly a member of the Jewish mob.
My grammar school PE coach, Chester Dumbowski, a rather simian sort of fellow in appearance and manners, was always "Chettydumbo." In high school there was: Flame Ranger Mike Spazzy Nagy LeNeeve's Butt ...all of which have stories behind them, but you'll be spared. Also had a Spanish teacher who was the spitting image of the actress who played Sheena of the Jungle in the early tv series. Naturally she was called Sheena and she always drew an unusually large crowd of concerned fathers on parent-teacher night. My father never missed one when she was around. |

At least in Philly most gangs were usually neighborhood bound.
If you were seen in "Moon" or "Lex" territory you were unofficially from one of those gangs. The local rec center would be considered a gang's territory. Except for a few/occasional hard looks, I got along with everyone at the center and hangout stores. I didn't join the gang but I had pull or check, a kinda screw with Mike, you screw with his friends type of situation. It got me out of more than a couple scary moments when I was 13/14. |
