I think Humphery Bogart pretty much was the ultimate hollywood tough guy the ones others are measured against. Maltese Falcon and Casablanca come to mind, but all his roles from the late thirties on would do.
Kirk Douglas did this as well, although many of the movies he was in that show him in this light are now forgotten. Sean Connery was a very nasty customer in many of his movies, including the early bond before they became increasingly farcial. Christopher Lee also played this role often, but his tough guys were commonly on the edge, or past the edge, of madness which is a very different type of character. Telly Sevalas also comes to mind. |
