Barry?
He went by the name Barry until he decided to run for the state legislature with something more ethnic-sounding (his birth name Barack.) It was a clever political move on his part because it brought his diverse background to the forefront, something that liberals gobble up in elections.

Contrast that to Republican Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, who grew up as as an Indian-American Hindu with the name Piyush Jindal. In college, Jindal realized that in order to achieve his political ambitions, he would have to fit in more with the conservative Republican base of the South. Thus, he converted to Christianity, took right-wing extremist views, picked up a Southern drawl, praised Christian evangelism, and started calling himself Bobby, in honor of his favorite television character (Bobby of Brady Bunch fame.)

Jindal claims that he was a natural fit for Christianity after a college classmate handed him a Bible, but I think political opportunism is the more likely explanation for the alleged spiritual epiphany. In any case, Jindal's strategy paid off. He got elected to the U.S Congress and last year got elected Governor of Louisiana. He's bandied about as an example of Republican inclusiveness even though many believe he turned his back on his heritage in order to fit in (not quite - he's married to an Indian-American and takes his Indian Hindu parents with him everywhere.) It appears likely that he will run for president in 2012 or 2016, depending on who wins in 2008. He's certain to be the Obama of the Republican party.

Yes, because as we know, Johnnys never become John, Bobby never becomes Robert, and Billy never becomes William as people get older. Stupid issue.

Why does what a Presidential candidate looks like matter? I see people obsessing about Hillary Clinton's looks as though this was some big joke that everybody should get. I don't.

Or is it just because she's a woman?

I just don't feel I can stomach looking at her for any length of time. She grates on my last nerve. Bill does too. As does W. I dislike politicians in general. And don't trust them a far as I can throw a freight train.

Think about it. When was the last time the uglier candidate won? Personality and appearance have a lot to do with who gets elected.

True, they even found a Democrat who looked worse than Nixon at the time (Goldwater).

I don't think Hillary looks bad at all, other than the big teeth.

I think she looks much better now than she did as First Lady, or as a young adult. Not gorgeous by any means, but not ugly either.

Some people considered Thomas Dewey attractive. He lost to Roosevelt in 1944 and Truman in 1948. To me, Dewey looks a bit like Mr. Bean with a mustache:

Well McCain is really a democrat. He's as liberal as they come. He won't get my vote either unless he makes Hukabee his running mate. Then I might consider voting for him. I think Obama will take Hillary out. My biggest problem with McCain is amnesty for the illegals.
