The length of time it takes for the center of a pastry to cook depends on the distance from the heat-bearing surface. An uncooked center was always a problem with deep-fried pastries, so a hole was put in the center to allow the dough to cook more uniformly.

As for other types of doughnuts, it would be hard to make one stay on the bat in the on-deck circle if there was no hole for the bat to go through.

Also, 'doughnut' is often used as a synomym for 'torus', and it would not be a torus if it had no hole in it. So, in order that 'doughnut' and 'torus' could be synomymous, it was necessary to put a hole in it.

I'm not sure. I am sure about PA, NJ, NY, CA, VA, D.C., MA, MD, CT, IL, Oh, FL and TJ.

I needed a vaction, and then work changed substantially. I'm over 50 hour weeks, plus two hours a day of commuting time. A few weeks ago I launched my own blog about Seattle Sounders FC and Life in Puget Sound. I won't be by these parts often as my focus has changed. Sorry about the unannounced retirement.
