Default Sevilla-Betis Chaos

Did anyone else take note of the chaos in Sevilla the other night? The president of the Sevilla team was hit by flying objects in the VIP box, and the head coach was knocked out cold when a bottle hit him in the head. Fans flipped over cars, set fire to trash bins, subjected players to racial slurs, and beat each other up. My uncle, a Betis fan and season ticket holder, luckily did not attend this game. My grandmother, a Sevilla fan, did go, and boasted about how she smacked a "cochino asqueroso Betico" with her pocketbook. The game ultimately had to be called, and both teams took responsibility. They say they over-hyped the match in the days leading up to it.

Frederic Kanoute, previously of Tottenham, hit the game's only goal for Sevilla. It was a real beauty:

Here's a nice, albeit long, homemade video of the atmosphere just before the game:

I saw the match via TIVO this morning. I have to admit, even though I knew the tensions would be high because of the pre-match build up, I was surprised at how crazy things got. Knocking out the coach?! Tell me that's not on Betis, as the home side, to control their crowd. The abandoned match should not be resumed: they were losing the aggregate, and the match should be awarded to Sevilla.
BTW: I wonder what the Spanish authorities are going to do about this? Italy shut things down for a week, and instituted some immediate changes. Given the recent run of events in Spain, they would do well to do the same.

Betis received a substantial fine and lost the privilege of hosting its next three home games. They'll be played in suburban Madrid.

Meanwhile, fighting broke out in Sevilla's stadium in a 2-1 Sevilla win over Barcelona. A section of the stadium had to be temporarily evacuated before play resumed.
