Tactical Switch Is 'Food For Thought' | Bolton Wanderers | News | Latest News | General
After watching Bolton flounder multiple times in the past due to the ever-present 4-5-1 utilized by Gary Megson (and at one point perfected by Big Sam), the Bolton boss has come out and admitted that there are "good things" about using the 4-4-2 with the Bolton lineup. After falling behind at Arsenal in their last match, Megson swapped the 4-5-1 for a 4-4-2 approach and Bolton found themselves possessing the ball and attacking more because of it. As a result, Megson has finally taken a genuine interest in switching from the 4-5-1, though it's unlikely we'll see that switch come to fruition until after the match against United. I say -- FANTASTIC! Bolton need a change in formation, and given the fact that our attacking options aren't quite as thin as last year (and we don't have Gregorz Rasiak to worry about out there), there's no reason whatsoever that Bolton couldn't adopt a genuine 4-4-2 (or even a 4-3-1-2) to get some better attacking options and open Davies and Elmander up to feed off of each other. Smolarek managed to play alright up front, and could also be beneficial in a 4-4-2 formation alongside Elmander or Davo, but one would hope the primary pairing would indeed be Davies/Elmander with Smolarek/Vaz Te (yeah, he's still there) being a decent fall back pairing. This also comes back to the point about Riga being able to gain some speed down the wings and have options for service, rather than aiming for one striker covered with 3 defenders... Thanks Megson, it's about time!
