I guess a new deal was never officially reached between Ryan Smyth and the Oilers:

Quote:
Unable to reach a long-term deal with their heart-and-soul player, the Edmonton Oilers instead traded Ryan Smyth to the New York Islanders for prospects Ryan O'Marra and Robert Nilsson and the Islanders' first-round pick in 2007.
Oilers trade forward Smyth to Islanders

Are Oilers fans okay with the trading of Smyth for youth?

Absolutely. He had 20 games left until UFA status. We raped the Islanders. So we have the 5.5 million for 5 years + 2 prospects + a 1st rounder. Drop a couple of UFAs and we have the resources to sign a real elite player.

Solid business move. 5.5 mill for 5 years with a no trade clause = suicide.
