I'm hoping I'm not the only one who thinks MacT should be gone.
In five complete seasons with MacT behind the bench, I think it's fair to say that our team should be better than it is. We seem to always be fighting for 8th place...we never get better. We're on pace to miss the playoffs for the third time in six years. MacT and the rest of the coaching staff (Especially Simpson) should be let go. Time for some new blood! |

I really don't think he's been all that bad to be honest.
How can MacT do anything without good players? The few he has have suffered injuries throughout the season. To expect wins from him is expecting an electrician to rewire your house without his toolkit or access to your power supply - it aint gonna happen. He showed us what he can do last year. |

I think MacT has run his course with the Oilers and there isn't much more he can do. Players are underachieving for him and his job is to get the most production out of them. Certainly you would agree that the Oilers should be a far more offensive team than they are with the players they have. I'd like to see someone new...what's Brent Sutter doing next season?

But I would agree, that if by training camp, the Oilers roster hasn't added a top line forward and puck moving D...Lowe's head should roll. |

I don't know what's true, but I seemed to have read or heard that in the past, Smyth had taken the hometown discount to stay there and this time he felt like he should get what he wanted. Is that true?
If that's the case, you can't blame the guy too much. Those sure were some big tears he was shedding there. |

Why should Lowe's head roll? A Norris Trophy trophy winning defenseman wants to move in part because his wife isn't happy. He deals him away for two former first-rounders (Smid, Lupul) and a 1st round pick. Then, his franchise winger wants too much money to stick around and basically plans on testing the free agent waters...so he gets two more 1st round prospects (Nilsson, O'Marra) and another 1st round pick plus an additional 3rd rounder.
Lowe loses perhaps the 2nd most important guy to the Oiler's character, Ethan Moreau to an injury, Jarret Stoll (a big part of the power play) gets hurt. While I understand its tough to see those guys leave and get hurt how is that really Lowe's fault. What does Lowe do? Just give them away? He didn't, he forced other teams to pay a very steep price for both of those guys and your team basically got SIX first round picks out of it. That's incredible. As far as MacTavish goes...I am not going to blame him at all either. This team has faced a ton of adversity and not to mention having to live up to the raised expectations by last year's success. Yet, look at all of the components from that team that were not here for the start of this season. ~ No Pronger ~ No Spacek ~ No Samsonov (although this year you could argue that wasn't much of a loss) ~ No Tarnstrom (not that big of a loss either) ~ No Laraque That's a lot of changes. That would be tough for any coach to simply fill in and replace. Yet, I think you have to look at the long-term. Your team's prospect pool is beyond loaded. Dubnyk, Schremp, Gilbert, Pouliot, Nilsson, O'Marra, Smid, and Cogliano. That is going to coincide with overall fairly young core of vets. I think the future for the Oilers is very bright. Does it hurt this season, no doubt. Yet...MacTavish and Lowe really have done the best that they could do considering the circumstances IMO. GO WILD!!!

The way Lowe handled the whole Smyth situation is very questionable. He could of got a heck of alot better, GM's willingly said they would of paid alot more than the crap the Isles sent them. Mac T brought this team to the finals, I really dont think he's the problem.
You've had two superstars leave the team now, its just bad luck. All the players you've gotten in return aren't even close to being superstars as Pronger and Smyth are! Give it some time, the young guys will come through and this will all pay off. Of course as a Canucks fan I hope it doesnt lol. |

I think the blame for the deal he took has to come from Smyth. Smyth didn't basically reject the offer until the last minute; forcing him to take a deal that he did. I still think 6 first round selections is pretty good. Yet, in the short term there is no way NOT to lose in such a deal. The long-term effect is the real judgement. If the Oilers cast off these picks and prospects and get little to nothing in return then this trade becomes about as bad as the Joe Thornton deal.
