Post Pistons Midseason Report

Quote:
The Pistons hit the season's midway point Friday night. Through 39 games, they are 23-16, a record that pales to last season's 34-5. It also loses some sheen when aligned with Western Conference opponents such as Dallas (34-8), Phoenix (32-8) and San Antonio (30-13).

But here's a better (or at least, more favorable) comparison. In 2005, the last time the Pistons went to the NBA Finals, at this point they were -- you guessed it -- 23-16.

"That's kind of surprising," point guard Lindsey Hunter said.

It's surprising because nothing has come easily this season. There have been injuries and rough chemistry on the court. Some new faces -- Nazr Mohammed and Flip Murray -- have not meshed. Another in Chris Webber is just being integrated. And before the February trade deadline passes, another newbie is likely to pop into the locker room.

Default Chris McCosky's midseason report

Quote:
Starters

Richard Hamilton (22.9 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 3.7 apg): Although he hasn't maintained his league-best 3-point proficiency (down to 31.5 percent), he has improved his overall game. His scoring efficiency is up, he's getting to the basket more and he has made himself a pesky defender. If he's not on the All-Star team, shame on the game.

Chauncey Billups (18.1 ppg, 8.0 apg): Are there any more questions about who's this team's MVP? The Pistons went 3-5 in his absence and the offense grounded to a halt. His ability to manage, read and control the tenor of a game and the temperament of his team, to say nothing of his ability to make plays for himself and his teammates, are invaluable.
