A defensive coach that has succeeded with the 3-4. FWIW, I think it's not a bad decision.

Not saying this was your point, but since you brought up Garret ... seriously, what can Garrett teach Romo? Romo's already accomplished more in half a season than Garrett ever achieved in his entire career? If I were Romo I'd be like "hey, I'm always interested in any investment advise you might have for me - or your opinion on the middle east problem I just heard we have ourselves in - but if you're going to try to tell me how to win football games ... hehehehehe ... go back to your office and read some more books for my retirement plan."
Garrett's a smart guy, maybe a good coach. He can help Romo be Romo, maybe. His years as an actual coach are too few to be worth the position he's in. This is typical Jones. If he was Brett Favre or Troy Aikman, I'd say "okay, let the expert share his expertise." Otherwise, Garrett is one of those coaches that never made it as a player. Can he be a great coach someday? Absolutely. But it takes time. It takes many seasons of trying different things and seeing how they play out. Give me instead a guy that has been managing quarterbacks for 40 years and I'll show you a guy like the one that made Romo who he was in college. Garrett will learn a lot the next several years. Unfortunately, the Cowboys and Romo will be paying for Garrett's graduate degree - and some team that picks up Garrett after he's fired will be the benefactor. This is why Jones hasn't won a playoff game in over a decade. |

Football at the NFL level, especially for a position coach, isn't as much about motivation as it is about X's and O's...and experience around the NFL game, where Garrett will help Tony Romo a great deal.
But anyway, Wade was the right choice, people often forget he took Buffalo to the playoffs and lost on a miracle.

My point had nothing to do with "motivation." It had to do with an actual history of deploying x's and o's and learning from your deployments. Over the years one develops an understanding of how to deploy x's and o's. Garrett is obviously bright. So bright in fact that I'm guessing he will be a better coach in 3 years than he is today. I'm thinking he's so bright he will grow where lessor minds will stall.
He'll make someone a good coach someday. |
