I was thinking about picking up the HD-DVD add on drive for my Xbox 360. But, my TV only displays at 720p and 1080i.
Just wondering if anyone uses a high def movie format on a TV that isn't 1080p? Would I be wasting my money getting one for a lower resolution TV?

The TV my XBOX 360 is connected to is a 20-inch Philips Magnavox that's about 12 years old. Needless to say, I won't be purchasing the HD-DVD add-on anytime in the near future.

Even if your TV was capable of showing 1080p, at that size, it wouldn't make much, if any, difference as the 780p and 1080p don't differentiate themselves from one another until you get to larger screen sizes (into the 40's and beyond).
You'd probably be better off just getting a quality upconvert-DVD player, in the short-term. If you want to speculate and assume you'll be getting a bigger, better TV soon ... and you think that the HD-DVD format won't fade away ... then the Xbox HD-DVD player might be a decent way to combat tech creep ... but if you are a couple of years off from upgrading your TV, I'd just invest in a $100 or so upconvert DVD player and enjoy. You really won't notice the difference (between that and 1080p) unless someone happens to bring their entertainment system over to your house and sets it up next to yours. |

Sparty's advice is sound - for your smaller TV it just isn't worth the money.
Unless you are comfortable taking the plunge on who is going to win the format wars for DVD's, those all are good advices for bridging the gap.

HD-DVD is dead, as everyoen should know by now... Blu ray will be the future. Already they sell those drives for PC's.
Unlike HD-DVD in general, the format was already read/write able.
