Default Stick a Fork in 'Em

And wait till next year.

Let me be the first one to state the obvious: the dream is over.

You've still got one week to make deals and get something of value for spare parts that won't be back next year:

Hawkins
Julio
Affeldt
Fogg (yeah, you'll get a ton in return for him)

You might also think about moving Fuentes if somebody wants to give good value for him. Same with Matsui; you could always re-sign him in the offseason anyway.

EDIT: Fuentes getting garbage time two days in a row. Tell me this isn't O'Dowd talking to Hurdle about the need to showcase Tito. A couple sharp appearances and he'll be in a Phillies uniform by the end of the week.

It was a fun ride. I really like these guys. They played hard, they seem like a fine bunch of people, and they're easy to root for.

Congratulations on making some progress this year. Now let's set our eyes on next year.

I love this. Every time we write this team's obituary this season, they seem to get off the mat and rip off some wins. Tonight was surreal......with no offense for 8 innings, and then the first 6 reaching base in the 9th, scoring 5 runs to win it. This team IS done, but they want to kick sand in our faces in the process of being buried.

Right, they're still done, but nice to see them go down fighting.

"Remember this day!" cry out the FSN sports booth.

Yes, I'll remember it as the day the Rockies showed us what they COULD have and SHOULD have been doing in all those 1-run losses. Remembering what can happen when Hurdle doesn't get to manage until the bottom of the 9th when you pinch-run your runner at 2nd with a runner on 3rd and nobody out. When Hurdle got lucky because the opposing manager took a shot at pitching to Matsui rather than pitching to the uber-hot Tulo.

Yes. I will remember this day.

Hey, Dodgers DFA's Brett Tomko.

Hey always seemed to kill us. And he's not really been any different this year than any other year despite an ugly-looking 2-11 record. BABIP against: .341. He's better than his replacement, David Wells ... and cheaper. And he's obviously better than Ramon Ortiz and Steve Trachsel.

See, I just can't let go yet ...

With the last week, with Fogg, Elmers or whatever his name is, and Morales having the wheels all fall off, ANYTHING looks like a good plug to the hole in our dam. Unfortunately, we can plug the hole, but it doesn't do anything for the other 13 holes that have popped up.

HOLD ON. Cook should be back just in time to give us one very small glimmering ray of hope only to be crushed when Hurdle sticks Julio in another 1-run game in the 8th inning.

They're done?!?!

For fans suffering through decades of bad baseball, it is pathetic that more fans can't root for the team when they are less than a handful of games out of the playoffs with more than a month left. Meaningful games in the last month of the season for the first time in a long time, and the fans decide to just quit instead of celebrating the excitement. Throw in the towel. What a great way to enjoy the best baseball season in years here.

Baseball is a sport for optimists. Every day a new chance. Every spring brings new hope. We'll get 'em tomorrow, and when there aren't any more tomorrows in a season we'll get 'em next year. Not here where hope dies eternal. It's like we can't wait to call the season dead each year and get to the fun part of bashing the team. Well this year the fun part is on the field.

I'm rooting, Aspire, but I live in the real world.

With 3/5 of the rotation gone and with half a dozen clubs to leapfrog to make the playoffs, we're talking about an extreme long shot.

I like what they did this year, and I like some of the discipline the front office exhibited in not trading away our blue chip prospects.

But one thing separates this club from real contender status next year. Money.

... disagreed several examples of young, improving teams over the years find their way into strong playoff contention with inexpensive younger talent.

The Rockies fit many of those examples, and perhaps have even better young talent than some of them that managed to win consistently for stretches and make an impact without breaking the bank with younger players on the rise.

Everyone wants more money. Give me, give me, give me. But let's not pretend that things are hopeless without it. Baseball says otherwise in many examples over the recent years, and we are in good position to become one of those teams.

Kind of makes one wonder about the concept of "momentum", huh?

Jackass, I'd absolutely love to see Brett Tomko in a Rockies uniform right now. It's hard to believe that things have gotten to the point where I can type that with a straight face, but such is life..

What a ballgame last night. Our best hope to remain contenders is that the win sparks us over the next week plus so that we breeze through our relatively easy schedule. I'm not sure I believe in stuff like that, but for the first time in forever my team is contending; I believe in everything.

Or, as Jim Leyland used to say, "Momentum is only as good as tomorrow's starting pitcher."

The Rox, by the way, have the 8th best record in the National League at 65-63, and are tied with Milwaukee with that record. In other words, 8 of the other 15 NL teams are in as good or better position as we are to make the playoffs. We aren't exactly in "elite company", but as Rockies fans, we'll take anything, ANYTHING that smacks of being "in the hunt".

I'm still waiting for an explanation of why Buccholz and Dessens don't have each other's roles.

Here's the main reason the Rox are done, they can't make up any ground on the Padres or D-Backs, when either team loses the Rox seem to lose as well. Finish above .500 the Rox might, but they will still 4-5 games out of first and likely 2-3 in back of the wild card.
