The bright side of the story is that the NL West is now the most competive divsion in the NL, with four teams abobe .500 and all four in the playoff hunt

Makes one wonder more about the accuracy of the pessimists here and their premature rush to doom and gloom predictions. Last edited by hiaspire; 08-26-2007 at 05:39 PM. |

The patient's ALIVE! They used the paddles on them, and it worked. Or, in other words, we stuck a fork in the team, and all they did was yell "OUCH"!
Let's face it. Jackass, myself, and the other "pessimists" (though we consider ourselves "realists") are not getting enough credit around here. All season long, when we have bashed and whined about the team, the team has responded and ripped off some wins. As I've written before, you should HOPE that we continue to bemoan the Rockies' plight, because it seems to work. The early demise of this team has been greatly exaggerated. We are IN IT! (and, with that ray of sunshine coming from me, watch them struggle on this roadtrip. It's just the way things work, lol.) |

Drew, thanks for reminding everyone. Just because I think the Rox are a longshot to make the playoffs doesn't mean I'm a pessimist. 32 games left, and 15-17 would guarantee them a winning season. I think it's very doable. I just think 21-11 or some such thing is needed to make the playoffs.
Iannetta may provide a nice boost. It's worth a try, and I'm glad O'Dowd gave him another chance right away. Meanwhile, today we saw the predictable results of a smart acquistion (Dessens: consistently mediocre whenever he's been healthy, coming off an injury, foolishly dumped by the Brewers just as he was likely to be of some value to them, and acquired for literally nothing other than the prorated minimum) and a stupid acquisition (Ramon Ortiz, consistently awful for 3 full seasons even though he is apparently perfectly healthy, and he actually cost significant money and a middling prospect). I can't see why Denny Bautista wouldn't have been at least as good a gamble as Ortiz. In fact, I suspect Bautista will be taking his roster spot shortly. |

In BRJ World, does...

Fans of the team should stick a fork in rushing to stick a fork in the team, and ENJOY the long-awaited ride to meaningful games late in the year. I'm surprised nobody has made a contest about guessing what day the team's hopes officially die this season, because people have been playing that game (and getting it wrong) all year. The team has played hard, fought through difficulties, overcame challenges, and deserves more support from their fans than they are getting IMO. Instead of a rush to burry them and blame people for the problems, there should be a rush to congratulate the players and coaches on the improvement made this year. There should be a rush of enthusiasm for the first time in years here in this position, not the other way around. Right? Last edited by hiaspire; 08-27-2007 at 01:11 AM. |

It's "very doable" has to do with finishing with a winning record. Which is nice, but it doesn't mean a post-season appearance.
A couple years ago on the old site I started a poll: "When do you think the Rockies will next compete for a title?" I defined "compete" as "a realistic chance of making the playoffs at the beginning of September," and further defined that (I think pretty reasonably) as "within 5 games of the NL West leader of the wildcard leader on September 1." The choices were 2007, 2008, 2009, or beyond. I chose 2009. I am very pleased that the Rockies have a shot of arriving 2 years ahead of schedule. With a decent week in SF and SD, they may very well remain within 5 games of the wildcard leader on Sept. 1. So that's nice. But playoffs? At the start of the day this morning, BP had the Rockies at a 13% chance of making the playoffs. So it could happen, but remember that just a couple weeks ago we were at 25%. So I "called the season" right about when the Rockies' own play halved their chances. And I'm not going back on that. I'll still pull for them, I'll go to 3 or 4 more games because I hate to see baseball end, but I'm not saving the prospective playoff dates on my calendar ... |

"Jackass, I'd absolutely love to see Brett Tomko in a Rockies uniform right now. It's hard to believe that things have gotten to the point where I can type that with a straight face, but such is life.."
Now thats just funny. Another funny post was HiAspire talking about optimism. Amuzing. |
