9-0 in the 4th... those bats have come alive today at least. Tulo's getting the job done quite well today both at the plate and in the field. Same with Taveras's speed. Holliday and Helton are making sure the baserunners aren't stranded. Mabry ending the HR drought.
For all the pessimism peaking, the last 3 out of 4 games have been some of their best of the season. Hopefully a sign of better things ahead. |

Todd Helton was 4-for-4 today and then hit a rocket that almost took off Wright's glove but registered an out. He's up to a lusty .365 now and his best historic months still ahead.
Taveras also busting out today with a 4-for-5. Two of those were bunts he beat out ala Chavez last night - except for the fact that the Mets WERE expecting him to bunt to push the runner over and he STILL beat it out and didn't just rely upon surprise. He also showed why we need him in CF most days defensively. Iannetta also with a multi-hit game today. It seems like the Rockies hitting coaches are having some success this year with taking players aside and making some adjustments for when they get back into action. The coaches will get a lot of heat for the slow offensive start overall, but they have also done some good things with personal projects and getting them going again. Now they've got to try to get those results to last and try to put together more runs in May/June/July/Aug/Sept than they did in April. Last edited by hiaspire; April 25th, 2007 at 01:29 PM. |

Scratch that 4-for-5 for Taveras and make it a 5-for-6 to move his average up 67 points in one day. These April numbers can shift so dramatically from week to week and sometimes day to day in this case when it's still early. Like Helton, he's historically slower out of the gate also compared to the average heating up in the summer months. In his only out on the day, he took it to a full count also. He's a bit of a streaky hitter so maybe this is just the start of a strong rebound for him upcoming.

that was positive. i cant wait to hear the negative spin on this.
"But you've got to watch yourself when you go up there. You've got a little guy on your shoulder, and we all run into that little guy. He's telling you, 'Eat the donut,' 'Don't eat the donut,' 'Drive fast,' 'Don't drive fast,' 'Hit a homer' ... They need a little guy that says, 'We need a good, team at-bat right here." uhhh...he he..clint what the hell are you talking about? does anybody have a little dude on their shoulder telling them what to eat?

Absolutely right about Helton. He wasn't quite right last season after the medical issue and weight loss as discussed at the time. That was a bigger physical factor than his so-called declining abilities IMO. He's out to prove that and show that he really is back now. Now he may never be back-back to the 40+ HR guy of long ago at times, but he doesn't need to be to give us one of the better pure hitter offensive weapons in the game.
It is another reason that this team CAN quite reasonably be better than they were in last year's improvement. Last year's team didn't have this same #17 as they do now at full strength. Last edited by hiaspire; April 25th, 2007 at 02:59 PM. |
