Like a homeless man desperately keeping guard over his shopping cart of bungee cords and VHS videos, the Rockies are becoming ever more creative at making sure that noboby -- NOBODY -- steals our worthless crap. Dammit, we're gonna stockpile those pitchers come hell or high water.
Tom Martin: "twinge" in shoulder allows us to stash him in AAA for a month BK Kim: "contusion" on his thumb allows us to wait another month for someone else's 5th starter to get injured Brian Lawrence: "rehabbing" a now-healthy shoulder; or is he really rehabbing a not-so-healthy ERA? Josh Fogg: to the bullpen, lest we lose Kim or Lawrence for nothing. And then, weirdly, there's room for AAA mediocrity Zach McClellan on the roster? I kind of like McClellan, but remember, this is O'Dowd's club that "just doesn't have any room on the roster" and needs to dump talented enigmas like Chin-Hui Tsao. What steps will O'Dowd go take to keep LaTroy Hawkins out of our competitors' grubby little hands? I vote for "pinched nerve in his neck." That'll allow us to let him work out his inability to strike out anyone by visiting a that time machine in Colorado Springs. Hey, maybe Steve Finley can visit that Cocoon swimming pool, too! [What a frickin' moronic theory: we'll have great pitching "depth" consisting of everyone else's cast-offs and replacement level rookies. Yeah, that'll work ..] |

Buccholz and Hirsh aside, it's not like these are exciting, young, 'live arms' with potential long-term value. Or great 'stuff' guys who just might work it out. They're mostly retreads with meager upside. The Lopez trade was pretty decent by itself. But considering our roster, I'd MUCH rather have kept my two young live arms in the high minors (with quite decent track records, mind you-- not like they were total projection guys) and my $4.75m. Speaking of $4.75m, anyone notice who was playing CF for our opponents tonight? |

Tsao still has a minor league option. So the question isn't why we would keep Affeldt or Martin over him, it's why we would keep Jayson Nix, Darren Clarke, or Alvin Colina over him. Which, of course, only makes it more exasperating.

HF, Ringolsby explained that even though Tsao has only been active (not DL'd) on the major league club for 2 or 3 months, he weirdly accrued enough service time to be arbitration eligible. So this was done for salary reasons.
Penny wise and pound foolish, as even with arb eligibility Tsao wasn't going to make much; in fact, less than Tom Martin. |
