We couldn't use Fuentes in high leverage situations in two San Diego losses, and now Clint brings him in for some mopup work in the 8th inning of a 3-0 game. Wonderful.

1st Inning, Bases Loaded with one out and we get nothing. This team is pathetic at this early stage of the season. It would have been great to knock Penny out in the 1st. Instead, he works his way out of the jam and stymies the offense for the next six innings. This team sucks, sucks long and hard.

Relax guys, you know the offense is going to come around and the hitters will start hitting.

Yeah, as soon as we are 10 games below .500, the pressure is off, and the starting pitching begins to stumble.

I bet we tear it up in August, and then are forced to listen to Rockies management and apologists talk about how good the Rockies young hitters have become and how much they have learned from this year.

I sense the return of the bunt happy maniac. Well the starting pitching has been very enjoyable to watch. And if we had a major league lineup we would have a very nice record.

Barmes walked twice in a game. The End is near.

Good thing we extended Hurdle. We wouldn't have wanted his contract situation to become a distraction. Apparently Jeff Baker is the best player on this team.

Dante, you are absolutely right. The Rockies and their sycophants like to point to the raw numbers, but the truth is that we don't seem to hit when we are in pressure situations in close games, and when the games really matter. This has become the trend this early season, just like what we saw last year.

Rockies lead MLB in striking out. George Frazier the Rockie pimp making excuses. The Cooler hasn't learned anything. Webb is next up. Rockies still road kill. To this point nothing's changed.

This is the offense that most said would be the best in the division..... its has been frustrating non-the less but lets take a closer look before we get our panties in a bunch

Using the most recent data from Fan Graphs here is the BABIP compared to their career totals.

Helton .280 .342 - I wouldn't put money down on him not hitting above .300 this year

Atkins .250 .320 - He's hit a couple of shots right at people in the early going. He will come around

Ianetta .200 .294

Taveras .284 .339

While its been frustrating, I don't think anyone can honestly convince themselves that based on the low sample sizes we have here, this team is going to be this bad at scoring runs.

Its only April.... lets at least give them until June to prove something rather then just the first week of the season.

Wolf, I don't know if you read another post in a thread I created the other night, but some strange offensive struggles are infecting teams this early season, and it has not gotten any better. Tonight, less than 8 runs per game were scored around the majors. The Padres bullpen hasn't allowed a single run yet in over 27 innings.

The Rox could have a disappointing offense this season, but this could be the case for many team offenses this year if the league level of offense is down. 10 days don't make a trend, but I haven't seen this type of low-scoring environment since before the Rockies were born, probably before your time.

EDIT: To be precise, exactly 6.6 runs per game were scored tonight, in 14 major league games. Better pitching? Bigger umpire strike zones? Or are the PEDs gone???

Maybe just a fluke.

I have seemed to notice that the umpire's strike zones seem larger this year. It seems like in all of the games I watch there are a lot of called strikes and strikeouts, more so than in the past.

I've observed the same thing, Dante. What I'm seeing are more marginal pitches, a bit low or a bit outside, being called strikes, and batters being rung up on such pitches when they have 2 strikes.

It's a nice conspiracy theory to think that MLB umpires were told by the commisioner's office secretly to call the borderline pitches more liberally, both to speed up the games and give the appearance that their steroids testing program is working. Lower scoring games could convince the public of that. But wouldn't somebody leak this secret?
