Default Rox at Padres, 4-6 to 4-8 Series Thread

Jason Hirsh vs. Greg Maddux

Josh Fogg vs. David Wells

Aaron Cook vs. Jake Peavy

OK, I'll start with a gripe. (What else do you expect?) Why is Josh Fogg getting a start? Cook will have his 4 days rest in time for Saturday's game. The Rangers just skipped over their 5th starter, Jamey Wright. He pitched a minor league game to stay on schedule. I actually would love to get Cook out of synch with other clubs' #1 starters. And don't tell me, "But the Padres are doing it, too." David Wells is somewhat more accomplished as a 5th starter than Fogg, I think you'll agree. Or skip over Hirsh if you'd rather. Just don't give us 2 marginal starters in a 3 game series when there's no need for it.

Having said that: I think the Padres will regret the Barfield-Kouzmanoff trade. I think I'm in the minority here. I think if the Padres are really, really lucky, they may have a Garrett Atkins in Kouzmanoff. But Barfield is younger, plays a more difficult position, and (I think) has even more upside. Marcus Giles had a 3-hit game yesterday, but I'm not sold on him. I don't think we'll ever see much power from him again. It's spelled S-T-E-R-O-I-D-S.

I think the Padres 4/5 starters will do well early in the year, but I just don't see Wells and Maddux pitching 300+ innings combined this year. So they really need to get off to a fast start.

We killed the Padres in the first series at Petco last year; I think we'll see the Rox get at Maddux and Wells. Peavy's another story. Here's hoping Hirsh pulls a Chris Young Petco-type performance out of the hat.

The Rockies have more faith in Fogg than you do. Than I do also. He was very good at times and very bad at others. Time will tell if that is a good player personnel decision or not. I'd bet against that one. I wouldn't skip Hirsh, though, as those who put too much into his spring struggles will have to reverse course there during the season with his talent I believe.

It's understandable, though, that they wouldn't skip a pitcher they think more highly of than you do. Just a difference of opinion on the guy. Also understandable that the Rox would philosophically be the least likely to skip starters of any other team because of the overall big picture of a taxing season that'll wear many of them down at some point. Lawrence could be ready before too long. Some of the lower rotation guys need to either step up or show they need to be replaced.

Jackass, if he gets hit by a lot of pitches this year, will you like Taveras better?

Yes!

Willy, let Maddux hit you with that 80 mph fastball 4 times a game and I'll love you.

By the way, to me that was obviously intentional -- payback for the Brocail-Francis thing this spring. And Kaz Mat made it hurt.

Let's see if Hirsh retaliates. Remember, Clint: save this one up, and let BK Kim nail somebody when a game is out of hand.

And Hirsh is doing a Chris Young imitation so far. Lots of flyballs, more pitches up than I'm comfortable with, but Petco loves him

I didn't see it, but if it was intentional that would be the worst guy on the team to put on first base. Didn't need his speed as much with the big hit afterwards, but there would be better guys to hit who wouldn't hurt you as much on the bases. He had a chance in a similar situation to plunk Tulo with two outs an inning before which would have made more sense if done strategically I'd think.

Could be a lot of bad blood in the NL West this season with managers and players moving around to rivals and unfinished business playing out on the field otherwise between these teams.

Well, Maddux's control has been virtually perfect tonight, so I'm having a hard time buying the "one just got away from me" line. Not given the bad blood between these clubs.

And you're right ... putting Willy on was a bad, bad idea.

Hirsh was kind of lucky early (lots of fly balls hit into the black hole that is Petco), but he's really looking sharp now. His pitches are down, and he's mixing speeds very nicely. I'm impressed.

I love watching Maddux pitch; pitches are just darn pretty.

A nice little duel developing here tonight... Is this what small ball is actually supposed to look like???

Corpas is a 7th inning guy. The Petco locker rooms have only 12 showers, and Corpas is in the first group. He has to hit the showers before the 8th inning starts.

Also: Hawkins gives Hurdle that little shot of excitement he thrives on. 3-2 to two hitters in a row. He has a 3 run lead ...

Fuentes has always had that cardiac kid thing about him, too. You don't see too many save opps from him that don't make me sweat.

Rockies pitchers walked no one tonight. Keep doing that and we'll live with your little heart palpitating moments... Good win; I'll take it!
