Hirsh was incredible. A great game to give us all high hopes and aspirations for the guy. Let's just hope he doesn't do too many of those spring training games of 6IP 6ER and such.
I wanted to strangle Hurdle when he took Corpas out after, what, three pitches? Hawkins looked better tonight than his first appearance of the season, but I don't really need the ulcers. Thank you anyways, Rockies. |

For all the heat, Hawkins works everyday and hasn't given up a run since opening day. He'll be better than some of the frustrated anger that's been built up toward him early this season.
Hirsh hopefully shows many of the upset general Rox fans that at least he is similar in pure talent (if not superior) to Jennings but just needs to prove it at this level. If DOD and Co plan on repeating that with other veterans as they mature (which certainly is possible) they could buy themselves a little more benefit of the doubt next time around if Hirsh/Taveras make them look good this year. Hirsh looks pretty strong on the mound whether he's putting up zeros tonight or getting rocked (at least by the stats) when I watched him in AZ put up an ugly line against the As. He is going to have to limit the fly balls, though. It won't happen but a strong case could be made that the Rox should convert him in a trade for similar highly ranked talent that might fit their park better. But I'm sure he'll be here for a while, and is going to have to learn to keep it in the park in Coors. I've posted articles before about DOD's thoughts on Neagle making it in Coors despite being a flyball pitcher because of his changeup. Hopefully that works out better for Hirsh. I have faith in him, though, so long as he doesn't give up a lot of cheapys at home and lose that strong confidence. |

Corpas is a dream coming out of that pen. Hard throwing sinkers. That's our future Closer. I'll agree that watching the rockies trot out Hawkins is annoying. However, we need a solid year from someone else in the pen.
Hirsh pitched absolutely beautifully. That was really fun to watch. Hopefully that changeup will allow him to survive Coors. The change ups thrown down and on the corners were filthy. Even the fastball looked good. I would have liked to see him mix in the breaking ball a little more. Especially lower. He throws it slow enough that it would have almost worked as a changeup to his changeup. And nobody expects to see it. Hopefully he can keep his head up. I think about 3 balls would have gone into the seats at Coors. |

Should I pick up Corpas for my fantasy team? Is he that good?
Fuentes really made it exciting by giving up that two run homer. I've never noticed him throwing so many changeups or off speed junk before. Probably haven't paid enough attention. It's fun winning on the road. I would like to see us blow someone out on the road, score a lot of runs, not just 4, but am happy this morning, except with this crappy weather. Snow adviseries in Arapahoe County. Twenty five degrees. Icy roads. Come on! |

Newman, there are a number of accomplished fantasy players on this site. I'm not one of them. I've always believed specific league rules play very heavily into strategy. In Corpas' current role, I have a hard time believing he'll help you. Not with the way Clint is using him and his home park. However, I do think he's got a very bright Real Life future ahead of him.
He can pound the zone with hard stuff. I think he's going to be the best closer we've ever had. Fuentes scares the crap out of me. Not like Chacon did but he's getting there. Hurdle really had Hawkins do the hard work last night. Rockies are off to a strong start. I think within 2 months Ubaldo Jiminez is going to be in our starting rotation. We also need to make a trade to bolster the bullpen. |

I was really impressed with Hirsh last night, and the few times I saw him this spring I was impressed too, even though the results weren't there. He has some very good stuff, a good fastball with movement, a great changeup, good slider, he even through a few curveballs that had some serious break to them. He has a long ways to go before we will forget about Jennings, but he certainly has better stuff than Jennings.
Am I the only one who doesn't completely trust Fuentes? I know he has been an all star the past few seasons, and I know his stats are good, but his stuff just doesn't seem good enough to be a dominant closer. With him it is all about changing speeds and keeping the batter's timing off with that funky delivery and arm angle, which makes it hard. Still, if a batter guesses correctly at which pitch is coming and picks it up, Fuentes gets crushed. Because of his arm angle the only movement he can get on his pitches is in against righties and away from lefties. Otherwise, his pitches are flat and his stuff isn't overpowering, like most good closers. |

"Should have" but I thought he played it right, considering... Padres have shown a lot of respect to our OF arms tonight.
Was a pretty typical outing for Fogg... nothing spectacular, nothing awful... he sure is consistent |

Corpas just has tremendous movement on all his pitches. Hurdle and Apodaca now know he's the clear #2 guy in the pen.
Actually, not have the official "setup man" designation could be a good thing if ... ... if Hurdle would only learn to use Corpas in the highest leverage situations. Like, for example, runner on 1st and the Padres best 2 hitters coming up. Actually, I'm not sure why he didn't start the 7th ... |
