So this appears to be an organization-wide prospect slump, if you count the Rockies, considering the starts of Tulowitski and Iannetta. Things had better pick up or our #3 ranking as a farm system is going to take a major hit this year, just as DOD got an extension due to the improvement of the farm system. Truly ironic development if things don't improve.

First, I think it's too early to say anything. Second, I think the key in looking for breakouts is to understand what a players weaknesses have been in the past and watch if they're making any progress in addressing them. IMHO Stewart's early lack of power may be due to working on his approach at the plate - trying to have better ABs, cut down on K's and make more consistent contact. If this is the case, and if his line represents progress in this area, then I think the power will come and all is right with the world. I'm looking forward to a couple of more months of the season to see what happens.

Organization-wide prospect slump? Come on. It's only been a couple of weeks. What, are Tulo's and Iannetta's careers already doomed? The cherry-picking lengths you will go to to paint the Rockies organization in a bad light are truly amazing.

K/PA: .201 (TL average .183) BB/PA: .098 (TL average .094) BABIP: .327 (TL average .315) ISO: .184 (TL average .151) This isn't a Dunn or Soriano-like statistical profile, where you can identify one area (strikeouts for Dunn, walks for Soriano) where, if they improve, they'll be world-beaters. It's much more balanced. I'm not sure if that makes Stewart a less likely candidate for a breakout, but it suggests to me that he has less room to grow in any one category than other prospects do. So a breakout, in his case, might be expected to consist of an all-around improvement rather than a dramatic step forward in one aspect of the game. |

He's a strike-thrower, plain and simple. Nice of Stewart to go out and show some power right after I called attention to his lack thereof... |

Herrera is indeed on fire. In his own way, he's doing exactly what RockieRooter mentioned yesterday in regard to Stewart; sacrificing some pop in order to make more contact. It's a tiny sample, but striking out at less than half the league-average rate, at a level where he has no previous experience, is definitely a good sign.
More thoughts on Hynick... here's an interesting comparison. The first line is Hynick's 2006 season at Birmingham-Southern; the second is Greg Reynolds' 2006 season at Stanford: Hynick: .216 K/BF, .063 BB/BF, .002 HR/BF, .302 BABIP Reynolds: .206 K/BF, .061 BB/BF, .013 HR/BF, .294 BABIP Now, there are some important differences... First, Hynick had never dominated like that before, whereas Reynolds had. Second, quality of competition. Birmingham-Southern doesn't play a cupcake schedule by any means - it's a legit Division I program - but it ain't Stanford. And finally, Hynick's apparent advantage in HR rate shouldn't be taken very seriously, because of a) sample size and b) Reynolds' known groundball tendencies. But nevertheless, those are two eerily similar performances. And while it's yet another piece of evidence that you shouldn't take a guy like Reynolds at #2 overall, it also suggests that Hynick was a hell of an 8th-round pick. The Rockies' scouting department deserves some real credit for this one (well, I guess it sounds odd to say that the scouts deserve credit when I reached the same conclusion after looking at my spreadsheets for five minutes... but you know what I mean). |
