Purplerow just pointed out that the Rockies are hitting .211 over the past week.
Meanwhile, Spilborghs and his 1.210 OPS are 75 miles down the road, while the dynamic Tavares-Finley combo bring their combined .300 OPS to Coors Field every day. ![]() |

I hate to say it, HF, but I don't see too many inspiring performances in the daily numbers that you are posting. Are any of our prospects off to a really good start? Are any of our top 30 prospects doing better than expected? It's early, I know, but I don't see much from your farm reports that gets me excited.

On the hitting side, all we have is a few older guys (Spilborghs, Gaetti, Miller) putting up excellent numbers... but for Gaetti and Miller, it's almost all BABIP. So yeah, there's nothing there to get excited about. And it's notable just how badly some of our more notable prospects are doing. That .208/.269/.354 line from Chris Nelson looks (and is) horrific, but Fowler and EY Jr. are doing even worse. And down in Asheville, Hector Gomez has struck out 18 times and walked once. Also, Ian Stewart's power has completely disappeared (.311/.367/.333). At this point, Spilborghs is really the only hitter in our entire system who I have confidence in. None of our high-upside guys are showing any signs of realizing that potential.
Things are a little better on the pitching side, though. Brandon Hynick, who emerged as one of my favorite prospects in the system after dominating at Casper last year (70/8 K/BB), is off to a nice start in the Cal League, with an 8/2 K/BB in two starts. Greg Reynolds is basically duplicating Hynick's performance, one level higher; he still isn't putting up the K rate we'd like (9 in 12 IP), but his control is excellent, and, as was the case last year, he's keeping the ball in the park. I have him projected right now (based on 60 career IP, so take it with a huge grain of salt) at a 4.96 ERC, better than Buchholz or Jimenez. But yeah, all told, it's been a pretty disappointing start. As I've said before, following the minor leagues is all about looking for breakout seasons; obeying the normal aging curve won't get a player very far. And so far, we don't have anyone who appears to be having a breakout year. |
