On Mike Rosen's show (KOA Radio in Denver) it was just announced the Rockies have signed O'Dowd and Hurdle to two year extensions on their contracts. More details to come I'm sure.
I'm ok with O'Dowd getting extended but not so sure about Hurdle. The euphoria of opening day must have got to the Monforts to do the extensions so soon. |

Well, the owners have finally stolen any hope form the fans that we will ever have a winning organization. The biggest affront to the fans is that Hurdle got an extension. Aside from being a perennial loser and a poor tactician he's proven nothing. How can we build a winner, when nobody in the front office or on the coaching staff, aside from O'Dowd, has ever been part of winning organization.
This team is the biggest f-ing joke in all of North American sports.

The Monforts are trying to put a major league team on the field at a fraction of the cost of what's required so they can line their pockets with profits. O'Dowd and Hurdle are "yes" men to the Monforts and basically do whatever they say without rocking the boat. As long as the GM and the Manager go along with the Monfort's scam without pushing back then there's no reason for the Monforts to go with anyone else.
There isn't one person in the front office of this organization that has the balls to stand up for what's required to build a viable contender. They'd rather collect their paycheck for as long as possible because they may not get another decent job in baseball after this gig is up. It's truly pathetic. |

What a joke.
Today was a perfect example of the blunders of O'Dowd and Hurdle on display. Hurdle walks 2 batters, both of whom score (in a game lost by 2 runs) and has Tavares sacrafice in the 8th. All 3 moves backfire. Plus, he reverts to his typical "this guy has this role" strategy, and brings in Hawkins for the 8th since he is Hurdle's 8th inning guy, even though Corpas looked great and pitched a 1-2-3 7th inning in which he only threw about 10 pitches and had great velocity. As for O'Dowd, Hawkins is his 3.5 million setup man. This is what we have to look forward to for the next three years. |

I'm speechless. Simply speechless. I know FOR A FACT that Charlie Monfort promised the fans that this year would be Hurdle's "scorecard", and that if the Rockies didn't improve their W/L record meaningfully, he would be held accountable.
There IS no accountability with this franchise. The message sent to the fans with these extensions is simply "F... YOU, we willl run OUR franchise the way we damn well please, and the rest of you don't matter." This, after saying this was the key year to measure Hurdle and O'Dowd. What a liar. He has some explaining to do if the Rox have a more difficult year than expected. |

Why? WHY NOW??
Just ridiculous. Especially Hurdle. As for O'Dowd: in yesterday's Post he was quoted as saying that in retrospect the money spent on Ray King last year could've been used for something more useful. So what's the explanation for LaTroy? |

I can't add anything to what you guys have already posted.
I was in Falling Rock Taphouse, and the ticker showed the extensions... I think I threw up a little in my mouth when I read it. I was stunned for over 5 minutes, and my friend couldn't believe it either. His comments were, almost word for word, what Roxpert wrote. |

I guess I am not surprised, although the timing couldn't be worse. It is almost like the Monforts wanted to sneak this by everyone on oppening day, when this news would be overshadowed locally by the game itself and nationally (not that anyone outside of Colorado cares about the Rockies) by oppening day in general and the NCAA championship game.

Today is one of the few times I have ever agreed with anything Woody Paige has to say. The Meat Packers killed the golden goose and continue to show contempt for the fans. Where else but in this messed up franchise would this happen. I can't recall any franchise in the last 50 years retaining losers like Hurdle and O'Dowd for this length of time. Can't wait for 2011.

Y'know what's weird?
I was at the game yesterday, and I can't recall any announcement about the extensions (even though I guess the press release went out before game time). Why not? Well, I'm guessing that such an announcement would've been met with a chorus of boos. |
