Todd will recover a bit in BA, but kiss the power goodbye forever.
And I'm not talking about the old prime of his career power. I'm talking about the doubles machine power of the last few years. Isolated Power: .123 That follows years of ISO of: .174, .174, .214, .272, .271 Notice the step down to a new, lower plateau beginning in '05? Is this the next step down to an even lower plateau? I'm afraid it'll be over soon for Helton. The classic old player decline: the plate discipline is all that's left. Pretty soon pitchers stop worrying about him and start to challenge him, and the walk rate drops. When that happens, his value disappears. And there's nobody to replace him on the horizon. Joe Koshansky? Please. |

I just took a look at Todd's platoon splits.
Get this: so far this year he has ONE extra-base hit (76 PA) against lefties -- a HR. No doubles. Small sample, yes. But other than the early 2000s, he's always exhibited a platoon split as we might expect. That's no problem when you put up a 1050 OPS and righties and a 900 OPS against lefties. But we're seeing the same kind of spread now, only shifted downward: ~830 vs. 685. The time has come to give Todd some days off against lefties. Too bad we don't exactly have a lefty killer to go to off the bench. Still, we gotta be able to outdo a 700 OPS from our first baseman, right? |

Todd Meltin' is now on the DL and Baker got the start the last couple of nights and Koshansky got the callup. Here's hoping Joel gets more than some pinch-hit at bats.
