Top 9th, Giants have a 1-run lead.
Hurdle pulls Corpas to go to 12th man on the staff, Alberto Arias. Alberto Arias is not a major league caliber pitcher! He is a AAA reliever. There's a reason he's your 7th choice in a 7-man pen. He is here for mop-up work. He should never, ever, ever see game action in a 1-run game. Ever. FRICKIN' EVER! Gives up 2 runs. Rox come back and get them both back in the bottom half. And lose by a run. Roxpert, where are you? We need your "Hurdle Losses" Meter again ... |

Hurdle has had a few this season... I think that World Series run was a double edged sword looking back on it. Yes it was nice to be in the World Series, but its killing me know watching this team, and knowing they have more talent then what they bring to the field each night, and on top of that, knowing that now there is no chance in hell Hurdle will get canned.

Arias pitched o.k. in a few low-leverage opportunities this year, and all of a sudden Hurdle moves him into a critical situation. And one run down at Coors in the top of the 9th still gives you a pretty decent chance of winning, as events in the bottom half of the 9th proved.
If the saber guys have taught us one thing, it is that we shouldn't be unduly impacted by an extremely short period of success or failure. I just checked HF's spreadsheet -- Arias projects as a 6.50+ ERA guy. His half dozen o.k. innings this year mean nothing. Zero. He's still Alberto Arias, 25 year old righty reliever with an average fastball and no secondary pitch. |
