Default Huh?

BRJ, Occam's Razor is rarely a fan of elaborate conspiracy theories that require a series of assumptions. So let's start with this: if you rule out financial gain as a motive for these DOS attacks, then what's left?

The programs weren't designed to scoop up all sorts of tickets for brokers and were not simply the brokers' ticket "bots" that everyone predicted. This is obvious when you consider the fact that, knowing the end result of their attacks on Monday (i.e. less than 500 tickets were sold), they attempted to do the EXACT SAME THING ON TUESDAY!

These were solely designed to overrun the system, so I ask you again: failing a financial motive or attempt to secure large quantities of tickets to resell, what motive is left?

"They were purely attempting to flood the site to bring it down," he said. "We're prepared for denial-of-service attacks, but we had never seen ... this variant." David Butler, CEO of Paciolan

If you want to call David Butler a liar, that's your prerogative. But at least be honest about what you're doing and the assumptions that you're making.

Funny you should mention that. I got caught in a horrific traffic jam on I-25 last week on my way to work. So many people flooded onto the on-ramps that it was completely counterproductive. I think maybe 500 cars made it through to work on time. The only explanation I can think of is this: they wanted to make me late for work! Malicious *******s, all of 'em.

Default Not the same thing...

Are you familiar with game theory?

Individuals will always act in their own self interest- that's a given. But a traffic jam is a large group of unrelated individuals selfishly pursuing their own interests (which may or may not be identical).

The ticket fiasco was a different animal. It would be like a corporation (or individual in the Lex Luthor mold) buying a fleet of cars and letting them loose each morning on I-25 to clog up the mouse trap just because it's a fun thing to do.

Why do tickets seem to sell-out within minutes?

Lawsuits: Why Do Ticketmaster Events Sell Out Instantly?

Key quote (and I'm not sure I believe it's the truth):

Quote:
What high tech wonder-tools does RMG use to defeat Ticketmaster's captchas, the annoying jumble of characters used to prove your humanity? Is it Optical Character Recognition? Something even more futuristic, maybe web 3.0-ish? Nah. Cipriano Garibay, president of RMG Technologies, boasts: "We pay guys in India $2 an hour to type the answers."
I'm still waiting on that "malicious attack" evidence.

Well, it's been 60 days since the FBI opened an investigation. I'm thinking they might be operating on something closer to their schedule than yours, BRJ.
