What is going on with Francis? Fatigue? He just isn't right, and hasn't been for the last few weeks.

I'm following this one on gameday.

2-1 Rockies, bottom 7.

Hawpe leads off with a hit. Torrealba bunts him over. Proctor pitching. Quintanilla due up. Hurdle goes to .... KOSHANSKY?

No thread hijacking here, and maybe Joe Ko will come through. But really ... isn't this the kind of situation that calls out for "veteran pinch hitter?" Or at least for "hitter who's had more than half a dozen major league at bats?"

I still cringe when I see what O'Dowd has given Hurdle to work with here.

EDIT: JoKo doubles. As I was saying, I'm sure glad we're not relying on some washed up Mark Sweeney instead of a young stud like Koshansky ....

EDIT 2: Bases loaded, Holliday up, 2 outs. Matt, if you want serious MVP consideration, now's the time to hit one out ...

WE WIN! WE'RE NOT ELIMINATED YET! 3-1!

Take the nightcap and we're tied with the Dodgers. And we have games left against the NL West competition.

The biggest problem: the Phillies have a bunch of games against the likes of the Nationals, and they've opened up a bit of a lead on the Dodgers and Rockies. So by beating up on the competition we may be paving the way for the Phillies. By the way, I can't stand Philadelphia. I've spent many a day there. It's an ugly city. The fans are the rudest in American, and they're proud of it. I kind of like Ryan Howard, but I can't stand the team. Better the Dodgers than the Phillies. I can't believe I just said that.

That's funny, wasn't it you who wrote that the Phillies are a team you would want to root for, after the team prevented the tarp from flying into the stands during that rain delay a couple months ago? They prevented an ugly situation, while our "choir boy" Rockies nary lifted a finger to help out. Or, maybe I'm confusing you with someone else.

roxpert he said

"The baseball gods will not soon forget this. Mark my words: after the break the Phillies will go on a tear; the Rockies will sink like a rock"

That's right, and the baseball gods will reward the Phillies with the opportunity to get crushed in the first round of the playoffs.

Seems like an awful long time since we've had a Helton walk-off moment.

Nice timing. You gotta love that toss of the helmet as he awaits his boys waiting for him at homeplate. That's one for the highlight reel.

I obviously spoke too soon (or, I guess it should be wrote too soon) about Francis after his early start. He rebounded nicely, and the offense carried the way tonight. A good couple of wins. Nice to see this team fighting till the end, even if it will ultimately be in vain.

Wow. I'm not sure there's been a more meaningful Rox homer since Dante at the birth of Coors. Amazing. I yelled at the TV, with joy for once.

TIR, Barmes homering off Trevor Hoffman on Opening Day with 2 outs was as big as this one IMO.

At work, guys were cheering as they watched Helton win the game. That hasn't happened in quite a while. Casual fans are starting to think they have a shot.

This is why I fell in love with baseball as a child. Hero time! What unbridled joy! Did you see Hurdle hugging Helton in that dogpile at home plate? What emotion. Loved it. A great baseball moment.

Is there anything better than coming thru in the clutch like that? I'm still worked up about it the next morning. Awesome!
