#2 loses
#7 struggles #1 down by 14 with a quarter left Ohio State stands to be a certain winner from today's games, and it is possible that one of Georgia or Kansas (unable to win their division) wind up in the championship game. Hawaii, even if they win, might not be in the top 12 and could wind up snubbed even with a 13 and zero record, admitted with only two decent opponents

Well, the Buckeyes are certainly in. So, the national title game is pretty much of a bust as a result. We've been promised a boring game even if it's close.
Nobody who fails to win their conference should be in, so scratch Kansas/Georgia/Missouri/Arizona State among the 1-2 loss teams. USC losing to Stanford, and I changed my mind about Virginia Tech. Losing to LSU by 41, should eliminate those two teams. The opponent has to be LSU or Oklahoma. Tough to say, but I would say Oklahoma. I would say Oklahoma. Both of their loses were on the road, the Texas Tech lose being a fluke. LSU lost to an average Arkansas team @ home.

My predictions (not who I think should play) for tommorow:
BCS National Championship Game: The Ohio State vs. Virgnia Tech Rose Bowl (Pac 10 vs. Big 10) USC vs. Illinois Orange Bowl (ACC vs. Big East) Georgia vs. West Virginia Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma vs. Arizona State... it could be Kansas but ASU deserves it more. Sugar Bowl (SEC champion) LSU vs. Hawaii. If Hawaii loses, than either Kansas or Missouri. If Kansas played LSU, they would get smoked.

The Hokies get beat by 41 to LSU. The Tigers lose twice in triple overtime. LSU desrrves the nod over them.
Hopefully this will be the year the masses rise up and demand a playoff. But I doubt it. The buckeyes are as deserving as anyone else but they aren't head and shoulders above the rest. |

Va Tech may get the sympathy vote as well, although, if they make the championship game we are going to see many highlights from their most famous football alumn.

It's not the test, it's the resolution of the mixed record. There are several great teams with mixed result records and several near-perfect teams that haven't had as many tests faced during the course of the season. If we were going by record alone -- Hawaii would be #1 but they haven't faced a strong schedule. A playoff would truly determine if they were worth of more than criticism due to their schedule.
Or we can remain in the biased selective-winner process that we're in now and let writers decide who's number one -- which comes down to preference in too many cases instead of performance.

On Hawi'i, it is notable that most of their games end AFTER EST/EDT based newspapers can get a boxscore in them, so many of the voters based in those same areas don't even see a boxscore, let alone watch the games.

The Ohio State is #1 and LSU is number two in the coaches poll
ESPN - LSU solid No. 2 in coaches' poll - College Football But the top four in the Sagarin ratings are - Oklahoma, Ohio State, Kansas and Florida.

Missouri...a weak #1 if ever there was one, was an underdog yesterday on a neutral field. West Virginia...a 4 touchdown favorite at home, lost...exposing there one dimensional, one player team LSU, could jut as easily be 12-0 pr 8-4...fully one third of their games, they were really no better than their opponents. Why do you think a play off system will suddenly clear this up? For all intensive purposes, they play one...its called the regular season...and this year, many teams have had a chance, only to blow it in a game they should not have. What grand difference do you think a play off system will have other than to give 2 loss team a 3rf shot and teams who play no one a chance to catch lightning in a jar. This is it...complaining or wishing for something "better" or different will only jade and distract you from enjoying college football. relax...enjoy |

According to John Feinstein on NPR this morning, the BCS contract gets renegotiated next year, as the current deal expires in 09. The confusion of this year's regular season, with the resulting illegitimacy with which the two SUs enter the top bowl, plus there being at least four schools that feel they were robbed of a title shot, should create substantial pressure for a playoff.
Next year may mark the end of the BCS farce. |

Frenchman-I know a playoff would no more prove the best team than does the current system. I just support a playoff system where every team has a chance to become national champions, just as the NCAA does in every other sport at every level.

I just think this has been the best year in defense of the BCS.
There are many teams that had a chance, that lost crucial games at the wrong time...just like a playoff. Unless you are a major fan of Hawaii, who had the 117th toughest schedule out of 119 teams, you cannot fight this tears BCS decision. If you had a team you thought should have a shot...they did, and they blew it. This is the one year that opponents of the BCS have no case |

ummm, French, according to Sagarin there were dozens of the old DivI-AA schools that had tougher schedules.
