Tubby's stock rose fast, making it all the way to coach Kentucky where he averaged 26 wins a year and won a national championship. The Wildcats are among the elite schools in college basketball, right there with history like Kansas, UCLA, Duke, UNC. Smith was a success by any measure, and yet he's leaving Kentucky for Minnesotta.
http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/news;_...v=ap&type=lgns The Gophers have a long way to, and Dan Monson once a hot coaching prospect who built the Gonzaga program couldn't deal with the situation. Quote:

KY is a tough job. You're expected to win 20 a year; stay near the top of the SEC; get to the Sweet 16 regularly, past it now and then; and deliver at least two Final Four appearances each decade.
Tubby can be outrageously successful at MN without doing half of the above. |

How is that stepping way down?
He is going to a Big 10 program and he has a chance to make them an elite one.... Minnesota has good basketball prospects and he should have this program turned around in no time. The problem was Minny didn't have a recruiter and in about 5 years Minnesota may be an elite team in the Big 10.... There is certainly less expectations, and a 20 win season in Minny would get him greatness and respect from their fans. Kentucky wanted him out by the way it sounded....they were diapointed he didn't take them any further in the tourney....

Now that Tubby Smith is at Minnesota who are the top candidates for Kentucky. My guess is going to be Marquettes Tom Crean, but i hope not im a huge marquette fan and this guy is a top 10 coach possibaly top 5 in the country.
The Big Ten is going to get tough Ohio State Thad Matta Wisconsin Bo Ryan Indiana Kalvin Sampson Minnesota Tubby Smith Michigan State Tom Izzo Michigan and Iowa have yet to make there moves. |

I agree with Jennings the Big 10 is going to be a tough conference. They will certainly steal some recruits away from other major conferences with their good coaches
However you forgot Bruce Webber and Illinois! That is a program thats been stong so many years and is looking at a bright future....probably the most underated program in the Big 10

JoseA, there are only at most a half dozen programs with the history of success and expectations that one would have in Kentucky. Minnesotta isn't one of those. I don't think the Big10 has one of those. Their closest would be Indiana.
Legacy programs at the level of Kentucky are rare. Tubby quit at one. Roy Williams isn't going to quit. Coach K at Duke. It takes decades to get a program to that level and there is no reason to think that a single coach could accomplish that at Minnesotta.

You have to look @ his from his point of view though, no matter how much he wins @ Kentucky its never going to be enough for them. How many fans would be happy with what Tubby has done @ Kentucky ? I bet you 99 % of them would.
But meanwhile the Kentucky fans hated him and did nothing but call for his head. The guy always wins 20 games, I dont think he has ever lost in the 1st round of the Tourney while @ Kentucky, I mean come on......there is no reason he should be on the hot seat there. But he is....... So he takes a job @ Minny where he can sit back and win 20 games a year and the fans will be thrilled with him. Give Tubby 2-3 years and Minny will be a powerhouse and a top 15 program. I dont blame him 1 bit

It will be interesting to see who takes over at KY. This may be one that high-profile coaches avoid, much like they all snubbed NC State. The coaching brotherhood seems set to punish those fans who expect too much and appreciate too little.
Does KY have a young, untried coach who once played there? If so, he may be the only one who'll take the job. |

Tubby had to of believed he was getting pretty close to be being ousted at Kentucky for his underperforming seaons recently..... Its such a high profile job and he was probably getting uclers over it....
Meanwhile in Minnesota he has low expectations and the chance to build a great program from scratch
