I guess I meant active but your probably right. Are they in the tournament?
Do you count ancestry also? How about assistants of assistants? Former players? Dave Leitao actually coached under Calhoun at Northeastern and played for him there also. Miller and Hobbs also played and coached under Calhoun at UConn. Dickenman was a leftover of the slug that preceded Calhoun. Here's a tidbit you may or may not remember dlb. Dickenman was a draft choice of the ABA's Carolina Cougars after he graduated fron Central Connecticut. |

Once upon a time I had built a "coaching tree" similar to a family tree except the to be under the coach you had to have either been coached by or worked as an assistant for the man.
We were trying to figure out the influence of Bobby Knight and Dean Smith. Anyone seen one of these lately? Here's Tom Crean's Tom Crean (basketball coach) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Bobby Knight's Bob Knight - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Dean Smith's Dean Smith - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bob Knight and Dean Smith are good friends. Back in the early '70s, Knight attended one of Smith's coaching clinics and learned Dean's Freelance Passing Game offense. Knight made a couple of tweaks and it became Indiana's famous motion offense. In a lovely little incestuous twist, Mike Krzyzewski's motion offense is a variant of Knight's.
In terms of Smith's influences, his "Naismith Number" (where he stands in the line of coaches who trace their training back to Naismith), is 3. Smith played for Phog Allen, who was coached by Naismith. Current Carolina coach Roy Williams, then, has a Naismith Number of 4, as he played for and worked as an assistant under, Smith.
