... as Maryland travels to Duke. Maybe I had just seen all of Maryland's bad games when I wrote them off as not very good in my ACC conference roundup. Sagarin has them rated just a point behind the Blue Devils, and as anyone who watched last Sunday can attest, the Terps are capable of beating the best teams in the nation.
Further, Duke's weaknesses are a lot like Carolina's - young guards (Paulus and Scheyer) who can be overpowered by bigger, more experienced players. Add in that MD loves to beat the Dookies at home and you have a formula for a fine evening of entertainment. I expect Duke to win, because they're at home; but I don't expect the spread to be more than 10 pts and I think we'll see more than a few lead changes. It's 9:00 on ESPN. If you're a Lost junkie like me, you can keep tabs during commercial breaks and catch the full second half at 10. |

Okay, two great games last night. First MD takes the Dookies down and demonstrates that they, the Terps, are a team to be reckoned with as we enter the post-season. Then, two Texas teams treat us to a double-overtime thriller featuring two of the college game's best players. Much as I hate to see Rick "The Prick" Barnes enjoy any success, this was a fun game to watch.
Tonight's card brings us two more potential blockbusters, both in the ACC. Both games will help to determine the conference regular season champion. At present, NC, VA and VA Tech are tied for first, with NC holding the tiebreaker advantage over the 'Hoos and the Hokies with a turkey-leg up on the 'Heels. As a Carolina fan, I'll be pulling for VA as they take on their in-state rivals from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. However, even a Cavalier win may not be enough, as Carolina must defeat Georgia's Techies to secure the top spot in the conference standings. Though it doesn't look like much on paper (GA Tech is 6-8 in the conference and ranked at #30 by Sagarin), this is a real gut-check game for the Tar Heels. We haven't fared well in Atlanta lately and the 'Jackets have to get a win to keep their NCAA Tourney hopes alive. I expect a close battle with the 'Heels prevailing in the end. Then, it's back home where we have to (again), face a Dook team that's coming off of a home loss. If you're wondering whether this year's Tar Heels are a championship-caliber club, watch our next two games. If we win both, you won't want to see us on your favorite team's Dance Card. If we lose one or both, we're primed for an early Spring Break. |
