Default Knight passes Smith

Bobby Knight passed over Dean Smith as the all time NCAA basketball win leader today with Texas Tech's win over New Mexico.

Knight - 880

Smith - 879

I know Knight doesnt have alot of fans but I have no real problem with him. So what he gets in his players faces every so often. Im sick of the players getting treated like they are gods. I for one am a fan of Knights style....

Also you have never heard his name thrown around in a recruiting scandal like so many other coaches. And he graduates his players.....

I highly doubt we see anyone come close to record for a long, long time, unless K hangs around long enough.

I hated Bob Knight until I had dinner with Dean Smith and discovered that the two coaches are great friends. If he's good enough for Dean Smith, he's good enough for me.

However, I thought his post-game press conference yesterday was pretty lame. Getting the most wins all-time is nice, but it doesn't merit a rambling 15-minute memoir.

Of the coaches who are within striking distance, Krzyzewski seems likely to surpass Knight. His chances depend heavily on how much longer Knight coaches. If he sets the mark somewhere out about 950 (which would take about 4 more years), Krzyzewski will have a hard time passing him.

With his health problems and multitude of outside interests, I don't think Krzyzewski will be around much after his 65th birthday, if he stays that long. He's 59 now, and there's a good chance that this year's Duke freshmen will be the last to get a full four years with Coach K.
