Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson is accused of violating NCAA regulations regarding phone contact with recruits and lying to the university about it. This is a second offense for Sampson at Indiana, and it's a problem he had at Oklahoma. The question right now is not whether he will stay, but whether IU will have the guts to fire him mid-season. I think they will.
His replacement will be very easy to find. There is currently an excellent coach who is in the final stages of turning around his third program, with no quick fixes or NCAA rules violations in the process. UNC coach Roy Williams has called him "A great person, with great values; the kind of person I'd want my son to play for." Clemson has always been a stepping-stone job for basketball coaches. Perhaps more than any of his predecessors, current coach Oliver Purnell deserves to go to the next level. Indiana would be crazy not to go after him, and very unfortunate if they don't succeed in bringing him in. |
