Default Indians sign Westbrook to 3-year extension

Quote:
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Jake Westbrook signed a three-year, $33 million contract extension through 2010 on Friday with the Cleveland Indians, who locked up a key starter before possibly losing him as a free agent.

Westbrook would have been eligible for free agency following this season, his seventh since coming to Cleveland in a trade with the New York Yankees.

Westbrook's deal does not contain any options.

The Indians had hoped to work out a new contract with Westbrook during spring training, but were unable to finalize a deal with agents for the right-hander while the parties were in Florida.

Decent signing by the Indians, he eats up the innings. Although he doesn't get many strikeouts it is always nice to have a workhouse like him. Although 11 million per season may sound like a lot, his stock may skyrocket during the free agent signing period....

11 million a season is a bargain... His services would've drawn much better offers had he waited. Glad to see him take the discount to stay in Cleveland.

Great sign for the Indians here, 11 million is a bargain I agree, but I'm glad we resigned him. Hasn't done to well since resigning, but he'll improve. I really thought he'd be a 14 million dollar man, but glad he's still here. Only bad thing is now Sabathia will won't more, not really sure how much Wedge, Shapiro and them will pay him...Also got to save money for Hafner too...
