I really don't think that he's much of an upgrade over what we already had on this team. But hey it's not my money. As long as they don't stick w/ him long if he struggles. At this point i'm getting bothered by their lack of going w/ the young players in favor of over the hill unimpressive veterans. Just not impressed.

The OF/DH situation confuses me now. As a guy who loved ShinSooChoo, but wasn't necessarily disappointed in the deal because he would be playing full time, I wonder if the Trot deal means no more Choo?

Hear is what the signing represents:
1: Mark Shapiro does not want anything to do with playing young talent. Even if a veteran only has the upside of "below average" like Nixon. 2: You can kiss Jake Westbrook good-bye in 07. You can kiss both Sabathia and Hafner good-bye in 08. Shapiro has gone out and brought in any and every "has been" or injured vet on the market. He is praying that they find their youth again and we win before we rebuild all over. 3: Shin-Soo Choo: He is an athlete. He can steal a base. He can cover ground in RF. He has a great arm. He hit .280 as a rookie and destroyed RH pitching. HE EARNED A 07 ROSTER SPOT. We are perhaps the worst run team in MLB. Nixon, Fultz, Dellucci, blah blah blah all suck. We should promote our young players to support of core of great players. The signing of Nixon is a joke. I would demand a trade if I were Choo. |

i think your putting 2 much into 2-3 months of a season on choo lets see what he does when they get a book on him i think we are building this guy up way to much the year before he hit 1-18 jacobs field is a hitters park if healthy blake and nixon can both hit 20 hrs the team is not built on speed its built on power Plus choo didnt tear up rightys he hit 281 trot 284 choo also struck out 46 times in 137 abs

I think that people are getting upset over nothing. None of these contracts are long term. We aren't locking up old players for 4-5 years. Trot Nixon signed a 1 year deal. Why get upset? I'm not about to get angry at my team for signing a capable veteran Right Fielder. It protects the team against injury and gives us more flexibility when setting the lineup. No big deal.

According to Wedge in the paper today..Duh-lluci and Trot vs. righties. Micheals and Blake vs. lefties. Sizemore everyday. Blake at 1st vs. righties and Garko fighting for his Indian life. I know that Choo and Garko are young and not proven but the upside that they have is better than the upside they bring.
I guess my concern is from a couple years ago when Juan kept Grady in the minors while he stunk the joint up. W/o JuanGone getting hurt who knows how long it would've taken for Grady to get to the big club. |

guys
for a team contending for a divisional title we are already starting 2 rookies (Matre, Barfield) and if we didnt sign Nixon then possibly 2 more (Garko, Choo) Nixon is insurance and depth. i have no problem with that. he plays good D and when, not if, he gets hurt Choo will be ready to take his place |

Still don't entirely know what to make of this signing. But Nixon isn't going to stike out as frequently as Choo seems to, and is the type of hard nosed player the team was missing last year. Its not that Shapiro doesn't trust young players - its more that unless the young player steps up and claims the job for his own he will pick up a vet to push him.
