Default Arroyo and Reds agree to $25 million, 2-year extension

Quote:
Right-hander Bronson Arroyo and the Cincinnati Reds agreed Thursday to a $25 million, two-year contract extension through 2010.

Arroyo's previous contract contains $8,075,000 in remaining guaranteed salary: $4,125,000 this year and $3.95 million in 2008.

His extension calls for a $2.5 million signing bonus, payable in 2008, and salaries of $9.5 million in 2009 and $11 million in 2010.

Cincinnati has an $11 million option for 2011 with a $2 million buyout. The price of the option can escalate to $13 million, based on innings.

Looks like the Reds are doing a pretty nice job of suring up top end starters for the future.

Along with coming of Homer Bailey some point in the next year or so,
the Reds are starting to build a base corp of starters, which is sorely
needed. Lets hope we can get a repeat plus more from Arroyo and
Harang this year...along with hopefully 10-12 wins from Bailey,
the Reds may be more than competieve this year.

I am a little shocked with the money given to Arroyo and not really sure why they did it.

They have him locked up for another 2 years w/o this extension and Arroyo fell back to earth the 2nd half of last season...I would have taken a wait and see approach with him. If he duplicates hes 1st half then give him the payday. But I dont see the harm in waiting another year before giving him this extension. I highly doubt the market would have been this high too, that would have been another plus for the Reds
