If compettiton breeds success, then the Reds might roll all the way into
the 2007 World Series as they added another arm- RH KirK Saarloos was traded by Oakland to the Reds for a minor league infielder. Saarloos was 9-9 with a 4.75 ERA last year, and while that is high, he is considered a ground ball pitcher,as he has a tremendous breaking ball, sinker, and does not give up a lot of HR, although he gave up the most of his career last year. Saarloos will be given a chance to be the fifth starter in Cincy, and will also be able to work out of the bullpen. He can eat up innings, and will probably keep David Weathers confined to the bullpen as set up/closer. The Reds have spent a lot of the winter looking for a another pitcher/fifth starter, and Saarloos is the answer. This also possibly takes the heat off the Reds as for making any hasty decisions with Homer Bailey, and let him start the season at AAA, and then bring him to Cincy when they feel the time is right, and not have to rush him. I think this is a good trade at the moment, and we will see come 3 1/2 week from now when pitchers and catchers report for the Reds on the 17th of February.
