Default Reds continue to build...

The Reds have started the offseason with a bang. Today they signed free-agent LH Mike Stanton, and Alex Gonzalez, SS. They also traded C Jason
LaRue for the enitable PTBNL from the KC Royals.

Stanton brings a wealth of experience, not to mention a left arm, to help
rebuild what was a shaky bullpen. Stanton who wanted to be closer to his
family in New Jersey, signed with the Reds because the terms were right,
and he feels the Reds can be a contender. Stanton said the he did not care
what role he has- either set-up or closer, he just wants to play in the post
season again.

Gonzalez brings a much needed glove to the middle of the Reds infield, and will help to shore up the defense. GM Krivsky says he will take a .260 BA,
and any offense he adds is just gravy.

LaRue was traded to for a roster slot...and the Reds are going to pick up
4.5 million of his salary for Royals.

Krivsky says that this is the only the beginning, of a busy winter.
I have high hopes that he pursue Mike Piazza, as he would be a great fit in the lauching pad of The GABP, as together with David Ross, the Reds would have 40+ homers, and 100 + RBI's.

Bubba Crosby was signed last week as well for a utility slot in the OF, as Ryan Freel will see a lot more utility time in the IF.

Default The black will not be back!!!

For those of us Red's purists out there... if you have not heard, the Reds
are going to take the black out of the unis. Although I have not heard or
seen anything yet... the new look unis should be out in the next 4-6 weeks.

The unis are only going to be tweaked... but the Red uni's might become the
regular home uniforms, with Gray w/Red pinstripes returning for the road.

We can only hope... I hate black.

Default Reds to stay in Sarasota!!!

The Reds are going to stay in Sarasota for spring training. A new complex
for the Reds is going to be built across Fruitville Rd. from existing Ed Smith
Stadium. The request for funding formally was sent to the Florida Legislature,
in September. The complex will be around 100+ acres and include parking, and minor league fields as well.

If approved the Reds new home will be open for Spring Training in 2009.
It had been rumored that the Reds might move to Arizona with either
Cleveland or Baltimore, but it appears that the LA Dodgers are moving
Arizona, as is the Indians. This too will happen in 2009.

The Devil Rays are going to be taking over Vero Beach, and doing some major upgrades to the complex. The D Rays-soon to change/tweak their name... hope that this will build a new fan base for them in eastern Florida.

I think the LaRue move was very predictable. Once the Reds began giving the vote of confidence to Ross, it was the end of LaRue.

A lot of people including Jason himself saw the writing on the wall.
He was a welcome part of the Reds for the last several years, but
I think he can be an integral part of the Royals as well. He can help
nuture a young staff- now if he can only cut down the passed balls.

Default Bailey to be given a shot at rotation?

From Lisa Winston of MLB. com comes this tidbit:

"The Reds took the kid gloves off with Bailey in 2006, after having him work on a strict pitch count in a tandem starting (aka piggyback) situation in 2005, which he admittedly did not like. He combined for an organization-high 156 strikeouts in 138 2/3 innings between stops at Advanced A and Double-A, scattering 99 hits. He pitched even more effectively after a promotion to Chattanooga, going 7-1 with a 1.59 ERA in 13 starts. Before his move up, he struck out the side on 12 pitches at the Florida State League All-Star Game. Bailey throws a mid-90s fastball and plus curve, and there already has been talk of joining the Cincinnati rotation in 2007. "

Hmmm....talk of him joining the rotation in 2007. I say he will be given a hard look in the spring.... and I am guessing he will be one of the best pitchers in camp,, but he will not go north the big club. He will probably start the season
at Louisville and depending on his success will probably be up around June or so.

Bailey should be with the Big Red Machine full time in 2008.

good riddance!
Hopefully it frees enough cash to re-sign Rich Aurilia
On my lineup I had both Ross and Valentin playing vs lefties (one of them platooning at 1b with Hatte), now we definitely need a rh bat ala Eduardo Perez/Craig Millar/Craig Wilson if Aurilia bolts for more $$$ (likely when utilityman DeRosa gets 13 mil)...

Default chad moeller?

So, Reds dump LaRue, the next week they sign... Chad Moeller?!?
WTF????
He "calls a good game" (Krivsky)?
I don't give a damn! he hits worse than my grandma...
Goooo Reds! sign Borowski/Gagne for 4/5 years while you're at it...

1)Kearns trade(ok for Lopez...)
2)AGon signed as SS (instead of re-signing Aurilia for 2b, Phillips at SS)
3)a 3rd (as useless as LaRue) catcher
4)no starting pitcher signed, not a 1 year offer to Park/Ohka (those guys could help and are now pretty cheap) , not even a minor league contract to Pedro Astacio...

I can't believe it, they were 3 games behind the world champs damn it!!

Nuxhall thinks that if Bailey proves his stuff in spring then the Reds will almost
certainly keep Bailey and he will leave spring training as part of the rotation.

This seems very plausible...he was practically untouchable at AA, so we will
see... but I still think it is more likely that he will start at Louisville in AAA, and
then end up in Cincy in May or June, as I am sure that they will not rush
him, or let him pitch a lot of excess innings than he threw last year.
He is still young and building arm strength.

Reds signed infielder Mark Bellhorn to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Bellhorn would enjoy Great American Ballpark more than he did Petco, but he'll have an uphill battle to make the Reds after hitting just .190/.285/.344 in 253 at-bats for the Padres last season. He'll battle Jeff Keppinger for a roster spot.
