The Reds are still trying to position their bullpen as a strength, and with
the signing today of the very versatile David Weathers continue that work. Weathers recieves $5 million over the next two years, 2.75 million next year, and 2.25 million in 08, along with the chance of $800K in bonuses. He finished the 06 year with a below 1.50 era in his last 32 appearances. He can close games if needed, and will get some save opportunities, but he will be the main set up guy in th pen, and can start if needed in a pinch. Along with being a good guy in the clubhouse, he brings needed experience and leadership to the pen. Along with Iron Mike Stanton, Todd Coffey, Matt Belisle and Gary Majewski, the bullpen should certainly be a strength for the Reds as long as they can find a closer from perhaps among this group then the Reds should be a contender again for the wild card, if not the division. In order to make room on the 40 man roster, Brandon Claussen acquired three years ago in a trade for Aaron Boone was designated for assignment. Claussen is a talented pitcher, who let his control get away from him, and head him for disaster in many starts.
