One mistake costly for Lilly, Cubs

Offense only generates one run

Looper gave up one run on five hits and two walks over seven innings, striking out five

Quote:
CHICAGO -- Preston Wilson hit a two-run homer with one out in the seventh inning Friday to give the St. Louis Cardinals a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs and snap a four-game losing streak.

Ted Lilly (1-2) held the Cardinals to four hits over seven innings, but one of those was Wilson's blast, his first, which sailed over the left-field bleachers onto Waveland Avenue. Lilly had walked Jim Edmonds to set up Wilson's homer. Lilly struck out 10 in his last start against the Cincinnati Reds, and fanned six on Friday.

Cubs manager Lou Piniella, getting his first exposure to the Cubs-Cardinals rivalry, now is 0-1 in this series against his childhood friend, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa. La Russa also has the edge overall, 44-35, in head-to-head meetings.

Well another game you can blame on the offense, one run is pathetic. We have been failing to generate runs all season long, hopefully we break out of this slump.

However, Ted Lilly pitched excellent. If he wouldn't have given up the home run I think we would have won. You can't blame him much though, he had an outstanding outing....

Well, we are playing against our biggest rivals, the Cardinals. I have a feeling we will win tommorrow, but Sunday is going to be a little more difficult. It all depends on how Wade Miller pitches, and the run support

Barrett lifts Cubs to victory over Cards

Three-run shot in first all the runs Marquis would need

Ronny Cedeno also went yard

Quote:
CHICAGO -- Jason Marquis wasn't on the St. Louis Cardinals' roster last October for either the National League Championship Series or the World Series. But on Saturday, he wasn't looking for revenge against his former team. He just wanted a chance to show his new team that his 6.02 ERA last year was a fluke.

Marquis threw seven shutout innings and got some offense -- finally -- as Michael Barrett hit a three-run homer and Ronny Cedeno drove in two runs in the Cubs' 6-0 victory over the Cards.

Marquis is the first to admit he struggled a little last year with his confidence.

Barrett is really heating up, which is great. Cedeno finally had a good game, and got his batting average over .100!

Once again another great starting pitching performance, this time from Jason Marquis. Marquis has been very impressive this season. Miller and Zambrano I guess you could call the underachieving pitchers this season for us.....

Cubs fall one rally short

Michael Barrett's homer in the third inning put the Cubs up by two runs.

Wade Miller gave up 7 runs

Quote:
CHICAGO -- Albert Pujols slugged a three-run homer with one out in the 10th inning Sunday to power the St. Louis Cardinals to a 12-9 victory over the Chicago Cubs and take the series, 2-1.

Pujols' blast, the fourth of the game by the Cardinals, came off Ryan Dempster (0-1), who had given up singles to Preston Wilson and David Eckstein to set up the homer. St. Louis had taken a 9-7 lead in the ninth on Scott Rolen's two-run triple, one of his career-high five hits in the game.

But the Cubs rallied in the ninth against Jason Isringhausen, when Michael Barrett singled to lead off and reached third two outs later on Alfonso Soriano's pinch-hit double. Both scored on Mark DeRosa's windblown single that dropped between three players in shallow right, tying the game at 9.
